It was an intense weekend of racing in Sanremo at the traditional Criterium di Primavera (Spring Regatta), which served this year as the first Regata Nazionale for the modern Snipes and as Trofeo D’Isiot for the classic Snipes.

The Zaoli family and the Yacht Club Sanremo were wonderful for their hospitality and once again they have proven to be very important for our class. The availability of comfortable bungalows offered free of charge to the sailors by the organizers and hot pasta at the end of each day was great and very welcomed.

There were twenty-two boats on the starting line for the modern Snipes with high level teams also due to the presence of the Belgians Manu Hens (with Spanish crew Victor Perez Campos) and Thierry Den Hartig.

Light wind dominated the event with five races completed out of seven scheduled. The strategy was challenging with a lot of with shifts and different pressure on the race course.

Two teams dominated, winning all the five races: the winners of the series Manu Hens and Victor Perez Campos, who captured three bullets, and Andrea Zaoli and Davide Ortelli with two firsts. Enrico Solerio and Sergio Simonetti finished in third, consistent but less at ease with the light wind.

Rouding out the top ten were Paolo Lambertenghi and Marco Rinaldi, Dario Bruni and Carlo Collotta; Pietro Fantoni and Alberto Cassandro; Thierry Den Hartig and Eric Callot; Francesco Rossi and Frenk Filippini; Giuseppe Propsperi and Marco Ceccarelli; and Filippo Perdisa and Francesco Ghiretti.

Beautiful classic Snipes sailed in Sanremo, some of them beautifully restored and that represent the history of the dinghies in Italy. “Punta Nera,” “Medolin,” and “Sua Maestà” amazed us for their beauty and elegance, and we admired also the other four “violins.” A pleasure to see these boats sail.

In the classic Snipe fleet, the ruler was Beppe Zaoli’s “Punta Nera” with the young Nicolò Maretti as crew. In second place was Michele Orlando’s “Medolin” with Stefania Bonetto.Third was Paolo Fuzzi and Marco Prosperi aboard “Nin 5.” This event, strongly supported by Gina Zaoli (who sailed “Mia” with her daughter Martina) was a success and the formula to combine the two categories, modern and classic Snipe, in the same regatta and race course was a great idea.
