The course set for Mahon is nearing its destination. After retracing past World Championships in previous episodes and focusing on the legendary figures and milestone events that defined the history of our Class, our spotlight now turns directly to the upcoming Snipe World Championship hosted in Mahon.

Situated strategically in the heart of the Western Mediterranean, Mahon has historically served as one of the most coveted naval strongholds in the region. Its extraordinary natural harbor provided an ideal base from which maritime powers could monitor and control vital trade routes across the Mediterranean. Most notably, Mahon served as a principal base for the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic era under Admiral Nelson—a rich naval history famously immortalized in the seafaring novels of Patrick O’Brian.

The geography of Mahon is equally striking. Nestled on the eastern coast of Menorca, the harbor opens into a spectacular (almost) Three-miles-long natural fjord—one of the largest natural harbors in the world—surrounded by the tranquil, pristine landscapes of the Balearic island.

Mahon’s relationship with the Snipe Class runs deep. For decades, the local fleet centered at the Club Marítimo de Mahón has been a stronghold for competitive Snipe sailing, regularly hosting major national and international regattas that have welded the island’s rich maritime legacy directly to the heart of the Snipe community.

To maintain strict race line accuracy and streamline race management, the organizing authority will implement the Vakaros RaceSense system across the fleet, utilizing electronic tracking to detect OCS boats instantly.

The Fleet and Favorites: Will the “Armada Española” Prove Invincible?

The waters outside Mahon present a highly technical racecourse where sailors may encounter virtually any combination of wind, current, and wave conditions. Past events here have seen everything from glass-like light-air to heavy-wind battles characterized by steep swells. This unpredictability begs the question: will the local knowledge of Mahon sailors offer a decisive edge, or will competitors meet classic “championship conditions”—that unique phenomenon where local sailors remark that they have never seen such conditions during this specific week of the year?

The battle for the Commodore Hub E. Isaacks Trophy will be fiercely contested across an international fleet:

Reigning World Champions: Julio Alsogaray & Malena Sciarra (ARG) arrive determined to defend their crown.
Local Mahon Contenders: Damián Borrás Camps & Javier Magro del Baño, alongside Jordi Triay Pons & Lluís Mas Barceló, carry deep experience on these home waters. Other local teams to watch closely include Fernando Rita Larrucea & Juan Magro del Baño, as well as Marta Torner Rubies & Enrique Mir Pons
Spanish Contenders: 2022 World Champions and reigning Spanish Champions Alfredo González & Cristian Sánchez lead a formidable national entry. They are joined by Gustavo & Rafael del Castillo Palop, Francisco Sánchez Ferrer & Marina Sánchez Ferrer, Raúl de Valenzuela & Antolín Alejandre, and Roberto Bermúdez de Castro & José Ramón Pardo.
Belgian Contingent: Sam & Daan Vandormael and Manu Hens & Alexandre Tinoco.
