“The more we are, the more fun we have”

That’s the motto of “Funcup” (also known as “Fancup” or “Fancazzisti Cup”), the fleet championship of the “Punta Indiani” Snipe fleet 415 located on the small Lake Caldonazzo in Italy. Punta Indiani is the largest fleet in Italy whose members, since 2001, meet any Wednesday from May to October at 6 pm to sail their afternoon regatta.

No matter if you are a top sailor or a newcomer to the Snipe (or, sometimes, to sailing), the “Despota” Vittorio Bortolotti provides the most complicate scoring system ever seen to allow anybody to sail and fight for the victory. This scoring system formula is secret and is modified any year to meet the requests of equal sailing possibilities.

The impressive numbers this year were of 53 single races sailed, 553 total boats on the starting line, an average of 10.6 boats per race with the highest of 16 reached 4 times, which is the standard of these last years. 40 different helmsmen (and women) and 63 crews were involved with a great promotional impact for sailing and the snipe class.

Two different standings are provided by Vittorio: the helms one has Giuliano Dematté as leader, Gabriele Bernardis (back on the Snipe after some years of “vacation”) as runner up and Silvano Zuanelli in third. First in the crews standings is Marco Dei Rossi, followed by Margherita Bensa and Filippo Casagranda. Top helmswoman Ilaria Maraner in 6th place.

As usual, the fan-tastic prizegiving of the Fan-cup was celebrated at the annual “GFF-Gran Festa Fancazzista” at the Associazione Velica Trentina, after a typical local dinner with prizes for any participant and music played (and sung) by Roldano Cattoni & Dario Uber.

But… what will happen next year?

The “Despota” Vittorio Bortolotti announced another change in the scoring system, but we’ll have to wait until next year to know the details.
