Sailed on Irondequoit Bay, August 20 & 21, this dual regatta got off to the usual start–crews rigging boats until the skippers’ meeting, and a bit after! The Saturday PRO, Peter Allen (assisted by Peggy Crevey), got in one race in light air, before the boats came back for the traditional Saturday lunch. The Briody at Newport YC has always had a Saturday lunch, because the race course is directly in front of the club.
…
Lunch (and of course, the nighttime dinner) was the usual–way too much for a bunch of Serious Snipers–and orchestrated by many volunteers, led by Dorothy Drahzal, Carol Morse & Joanne Vaughn.
Three more races were sailed after lunch in a moderate thermal, and at the end of the day, Jim Bowers & his son Andy were in the lead, followed by Andy Klein & Grace Bowers (both teams from Winchester). In third were Harri Palm and Molly Kurvink from Guelph, who were the leaders of a strong Canadian contingent. Every year Newport is pleased to host many Canadian friends, even if they regularly beat us!
Saturday night was a great dinner in the clubhouse, and after dinner musical entertainment was by the Great Lakes Ramblers. Naturally, some of the sailors went “up the hill” to Sea Breeze amusement park to ride the Jack Rabbit–the oldest continually-operated coaster in the country.
Sunday morning was overcast and threatened rain with little wind, but our PRO Bill Topping was able to set a fair course, and we got in one race before the deluge. The teams waited it out on the clubhouse porch, and after about an hour back we went for two final races in medium air with lots of big shifts & puffs. Team Bowers was the winner, with Palm/Kurvink in second, edging out Klein/Olsen by two points. Congatulations to father & son as the winners of the 80th Briody!
But wait! There’s more! Sailed concurrently was the District One Championship for the impressive Lake Mohawk trophy, and yes, the winner was the Bowers family–with Andy Klein & Grace Olsen in second–and Max Hetherington-Young (junior!) as skipper, with his dad Kevin as crew. The trophy came from Winchester BC for this regatta, and back to Winchester it goes. Along with it, we hope, go a lot of great memories of serious sailing and fun. Newport was pleased to host the D1 championship after many years hosting the final leg for the Retzhaupt Trophy, emblematic of the old D5.
Many thanks to all the NYC volunteers who made this regatta possible, but special thanks go to Co-Regatta Chair Charlie Courtsal, who took over from longtime Chair Norm Dahl, and did the bulk of the work.
