Whittemore St John Regatta
Quassapaug, June 21-22, 2014. Results and report by Joel Zackin The 2014 Whittemore St John Regatta at the Quassapaug Sailing Center (QSC) opened to a beautiful weekend with an unfortunate wind forecast. 13 Teams arrived at Quassy to sail. Light and variable was forecasted and light and variable was delivered by the wind gods. Saturday morning saw gusts from the NE, NW, SW, E and W. Nothing really filled in so we ate lunch. After lunch the wind seem to settle in to the W. The RC lead by long time Quassapaug Snipe Sailor, Jim Lawler, set a course with a Sandy Beach to Watts Cove windward leg. The 2014 Whittemore St John Regatta at the Quassapaug Sailing Center (QSC) opened to a beautiful weekend with an unfortunate wind forecast.
We started an Olympic course that saw N, S, W… breeze and a few flats spots. Pedro and Mimi won the first race.

Two more shorter races followed with Katie and BB left Pedro and Mimi in a hole, and taking advantage of surprise windward work in the second leg, sailed to a victory in race two. Bob and Max walked away with race three.
Nancy and Brian Smith lead a crew in presenting a great dinner of roast beef and manicotti.
Sunday morning was beautiful. A nice 5 knot Easterly was blowing at 10:10, twenty minutes to the start of race four. Unfortunately the easterly faded as everyone got their boats ready and off the dock.
With large amounts of nothing on the lake, we postponed till noon and then crowned Bob Coyle and Max Hetherington-Young with their first Whittemore St John victory.
Katie Levenson came close to winning the “Get a Clew” award for the second time, losing a shoving battle with an oak tree. Pedro, Bob and others helped her straighten the oak tree’s attempt to make a pretzel of her mast. The coveted “Get a Clew” award went to Kevin Hetherington for being rudderless and clueless.
The “Take a Bow” award was give to our valiant RC, performed by Jim Lawler, Bill Crutcher, Allison Stafford, Bob Ford and some guy named Steve, and our food committee lead by Nancy and Brian Smith, who then feed us a great taco lunch!
Thanks to everyone that helped with the regatta, and thanks to all the sailors for sailing.
