Regata Nazionale Trieste – Trofeo Ferin

The Snipes did battle in the Gulf of Trieste last weekend for the first Regata Nazionale, which sets the Italian ranking list. Twenty-seven boats competed, fewer than in the past but not so bad considering the economic crisis and the geographical position of Trieste (in the northeast of Italy, near the Slovenian border).

The numbers help us to understand where the boats and the teams involved in the circuit of the Regate Nazionali come from. For some years the members of the Fleet Romagna and Rimini have livened up the circuit, competing in numerous national events and even in this case bringing as many as 8 boats to Trieste to challenge the best teams. Local Fleets, though in crisis for years, participated with 9 boats. Those of Trentino lakes had 5; the teams from San Remo, always strong, were 3, while from Tuscany came to Venezia Giulia 2 teams. No boats from the numerous fleets of the fourth district (Lazio) came, and this is maybe understandable due to the long distance, but for other reasons it should lead us in long reflections that it is not appropriate to make the national regatta here.

Only two races were completed on Saturday, and on Sunday we didn’t sail due to the bora at 30 knots. I must say that not everything went smoothly. The high technical level of the participants combined with light wind and current made the starts tough and hard-fought, and the general recall flag often was flown on the R.C. boat. Some OCSs were questioned by those who suffered and that heavily influenced the final results.

The second race should, in my opinion, have been canceled. It started with wind below the minimum required by the Class rules and it was then shortened at the end of the last downwind leg, which became almost a windward leg due to a wind shift to the right of more than 100 degrees.

The presence of a dozen of Finns did not help the management of the races, causing dead times between each race, which then affected the quality of the second race since the wind progessively dropped all the day.

Enrico Solerio – Sergio Simonetti from Sanremo deservedly won the series with two third places, very consistent results. Second were the excellent and continuously improving Francesco Granchi – Valerio Gavazzi from Livorno. Third were Chiara Magliocchetti and Erica Ferrraris, skilled and fast with the light wind of the Gulf of Trieste (they earned the second place at the 2011 Italian Nationals in the same waters).

Another team, formed by Paolo Lambertenghi and Marco Rinaldi, ended with the same points of Chiara and Erica. They were authors of a comeback in the first race. Also significant was the debut on a Snipe of Matteo Sangiorgi from Romagna, former Opti European and National champion and member of the 470 Italian team, racing with his dad Paolo.

The next Regata Nazionale is scheduled at the end of this month in Lake Caldonazzo.
