We had a small but competitive fleet which came to the Rudder Club in Jacksonville for the annual Gator Bowl Regatta. It’s a multiclass regatta where Snipes also share the course with Thistles and Flying Scots.

While the rest of the country suffered through ice storms, snow, freezing temperatures and winter, we sailed in summer conditions under a sunny sky. We could have used some more breeze, but it’s hard to beat sitting outside in shorts socializing with good friends and a tasty drink.

On the sailing front, Tarasa Davis and Alan Capellin, of Atlanta and Bradenton, respectively, won the third and final race to win the regatta. Hal Gilreath and Bobby Guild sailed the Clark Mills built, 8653, to second. Former Miami fleet member and now Jax stationed Naval Aviator, Al Ravelo, along with his super Jacksonville University crew, Maura were right behind in third. The racing was very close with numerous lead changes and tight racing. Chris and Lindsey Stang came down from Charleston and were right in it in every race. John and Jimmy Fewell came out and sailed with us and led two of the three races at different points. Jimmy and Bobby engaged in a fun crew talking smack banter to make the racing more interesting. Jimmy won one battle on a bet, but lost the war as Hal and Bobby finished up in second.

Following the racing came a nice catered dinner at the Rudder Club, followed by socializing on the club terrace. It’s hard to beat the weather. Hopefully next year we’ll have more wind and increase the “Serious Sailing” side of the class. Thanks to Debbie Fewell for the pictures available below.
