Regattas Overlapping

Ivo Gattulli from Rome asked to post his own opinion about regattas overlapping. "I'm just a snipe-racer, and a Fleet Captain like hundreds, trying to do his own.. “I’m just a snipe-racer, and a Fleet Captain like hundreds, trying to do his own..

So I received right now a really interesting invitation to the Memorial Carlos del Castillo Trophy, scheduled on 24th-25th August, in the amazing Gijon (Spain).

Unfortunately I won’t be there, cause during exactly those days (23-25th August) my club, on Lake Bracciano (Italy), will host the Snipe European Master Championship.. to be clear: I’m not a master, I’m just trying to give some help to the race management.. and in front of this over-lap (and all the others schedule over-laps in those days!!) I really have some trouble to understand what the hell SCIRA is doing?!?

I mean: in this moment it’s quite difficult find resources and Clubs to arrange snipe races (luckily/unluckily we have no big sponsorships or sailing federations feeds, not in Italy at least), meanwhile all SCIRAs are facing falling registered-boats numbers and the next Snipe World Championship in Rio will be yet another international snipe regatta with no “sold out”.. in Rio!!
In this kind of scenario we have to face this sort of self-killing over-lapping schedule (yet another!).

I strongly believe that is crucial have all the possible snipe regattas we can arrange, BUT in this moment it’s pretty more crucial avoid any kind of over-lap in racing schedule, at continental level at least.

I think that everyone can understand that cooperation/coordination, today, is good and worthwhile for everyone, I really have big troubles to think that someone could be so fool to believe to manage this mess “alone”.. but I’m guessing wrong evidently.. So I can only hope that SCIRA is (still) on charge to manage this needful “coordination enforcement”, otherwise I can’t see how we’ll pass through this storm and finally which is the SCIRA utility.

See you in Bracciano, or in Gijon, or in Netherland or wherever will be a snipe regatta! Europe is a great and awesome continent, as long as you consider it in that way.

Fair winds.

PS: please someone pokes SCIRA about the mistakes on its public schedule:

It's difficult to find dates during the summer whith no other Snipe races around. As fleet captain of "Memorial Carlos del Castillo Trophy"'s organizing fleet (152), I had a headache because hotels are expensive and full until august 15th here in Gijón, and in september most Snipes racers in northern Spain become involve as crew members of big boats' regattas in Galicia. We knew there were European master's championships on the same dates, but we could not avoid the matter. We tried to fix our race within the spanish calendar (http://www.snipespain.es/portal/images/SCIRAS/2013/calendari02013.pdf) and just hope to offer a race to everyone interested to come to nortern Spain, even knowing masters would be in Italy. We have been having a summer race since 1963, previously named after Prince of Spain (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copa_de_Su_Alteza_Real_el_Pr%C3%ADncipe_de_Asturias), and now after one of the fleet founders (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memorial_Carlos_del_Castillo), and would like to keep it in the summer, but it's tough to avoid other races.
