An Historic Return to the Shores of Lac Léman

Pensacola, FL, USA / Lausanne, Switzerland, April 1, 2026. In a move that has sent shockwaves through the international sailing community this morning, the SCIRA Board of Governors has announced a historic decision to relocate the Class’s global headquarters from the United States to Lausanne, Switzerland. This strategic shift is a direct response to the increasingly complex international climate, with the Board seeking a more neutral and stable foundation for the Association’s future.

The choice of Switzerland is far from accidental. Swiss legislation offers a unique and highly efficient framework for international sports organizations, prioritizing streamlined operations and the robust protection of member rights. By moving to Lausanne, SCIRA joins the prestigious ranks of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and dozens of other world sports federations. While World Sailing remains based in the United Kingdom, the Board believes that planting the Snipe flag in the “Olympic Capital” will provide the Class with unparalleled institutional prestige and a direct link to the heart of global sports governance.

This relocation also marks a romantic homecoming for the Class. It was Switzerland, specifically Geneva, that hosted the first-ever Snipe World Championship held outside of the United States in the post-war era back in 1947. That landmark event, spearheaded by the visionary Dr. Martin Dupan, signaled the true birth of the Snipe as a global phenomenon. Nearly eighty years later, the Class returns to the Alps to begin a new chapter that includes a comprehensive review of the SCIRA Constitution to align with its new European home.

Members should also prepare for a practical shift in administration. As part of the transition, annual membership fees will no longer be processed in US Dollars; moving forward, all dues will be payable exclusively in Swiss Francs (CHF). While the logistics of moving decades of archives and trophies across the Atlantic are daunting, the Board remains confident that this “Swiss era” will ensure the “Serious Sailing, Serious Fun” continues for generations to come.
