Why the Snipe for women’s events?
An affordable, athletic, and tactical boat sailed in 30 countries, the Snipe Class offers National, Continental, and World Championships for all-women’s teams.
Women’s events are competitive, but fun on and off the water. The average weight for women’s teams is around 130 kg/285 lbs. An experienced Snipe crew (tripulante) is invaluable on the Snipe. Historically, the Snipe attracts women from the Radial, Europe Dinghy, 470, and keelboat classes.
Great competition for all levels
Since 1994, the Snipe Women’s World Championship has been held every other year. Sailors from Argentina, Brazil, Norway, Russia, Spain, United States, and Uruguay have won the Championship for the Roy Yamaguchi Trophy.
The most recent edition was held in Valencia, Spain in 2023 with 42 boats and sailors from 13 countries. In Sao Paulo, Brazil in 2021 (COVID) the Worlds had 41 teams with sailors representing seven nations. The 2018 Newport, Rhode Island, USA, championship had 32 teams representing 10 nations. The next event will be in Enoshima, Japan in 2025, the same venue of the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021.
The Snipe Class is very strong in Japan with the largest fleet in the World, great competition at the Universities (All Japan Student Championship) and also at national and local level with many female sailors.
