Newport Regatta – Snipe Atlantic Coast Championship

Snipe Atlantic Coast Championship at the Newport Regatta

23 Snipes from six states landed in Newport for two days of short-course racing, the largest class of 11 one-designs sailing on three circles. We shared a course with 3 S boats and 10 Herreshoff 12.5s between Goat and Rose Islands, just outside the harbor entrance. 

Saturday involved several hours of waiting for wind before a southeast seabreeze filled and we got in three races. Ernesto Rodriguez/Taylor Scheuerman led the first one wire to wire but were OCS, so Bradley Adam/Stewart Gurnell took the gun—and then won the second race as well. Lining up for the next puff was the first priority, with traffic management a close second.

Things got a little more complicated for Adam/Gurnell in the third race when a foul bent their pole, giving Carol Cronin/Kate Fears a brief glimpse of first overall. Once a scoring error was corrected and redress given, Adam/Gurnell moved into the lead.

After sailing, the tent party offered dinner, music, and the chance to both catch up with old friends and make some new ones. With Snipe sailors well represented in the other fleets, it was a great evening of Serious Fun!

Sunday’s seabreeze was not expected to arrive until after the 1500 cutoff, so the race committee started the regatta’s final race in a light (and dying) northerly. We managed to complete the two-lap course before it quit completely, despite a bit of foul current that made the two edges pay upwind. Adam/Gurnell were the only team to post all top-five scores, with a tie for second won by Cronin/Fears over Ava Anderson/Watt Duffy. Trevor Long/Corinne Poitras were just one point back.

Both competitors and the race committee used this regatta as a tune-up for the North American Championship August 28-30, when we should have more wind! The late fee kicks in July 19 so please register ASAP.
