85 Teams Set to Compete for the 2024 Snipe World Championship

Buenos Aires, Argentina, October 28, 2024

The 2024 Snipe World Championship is set to begin in Buenos Aires, Argentina with the first races to be held on Tuesday, October 29. 85 teams representing 12 nations are at the Yacht Club Argentino to vie for the 51^sttitle. Among the 85 competitors are 7 former World Champions in Buenos Aires to vie for a repeat (or 3) at the title, including Bruno Bethlem (BRA), Mateus Tavares (BRA), Augie Diaz (USA), Ricky Fabini (URU), Enrique Quintero (USA), Alexandre Tinoco (BRA) and current champions Alfredo Gonzalez and Cristian Sanchez (ESP).

With favorable conditions forecasted for the race area, many sailors have been practicing for weeks, if not months to engrave their name on the coveted trophy that has been raced for since 1934. Held biannually, the list of World Champions is a who’s who of dinghy racing and includes such notable champions as Carlos Vilar Castex (ARG), Paul Elvstrom (DEN), Axel & Eric Schmidt (BRA), Earl Elms (USA), Felix Gancedo (ESP), Torben Grael (BRA), Santiago Lange (ARG) and Augie Diaz (USA), to name a few.

Snipe Commodore Zbigniew Rakocy stated that “All boats have passed through measurement, led by Chief Measurer Luis Gonzalez and a strong group of volunteers to process everyone. We’re excited for this Championship, hosted by Yacht Club Argentino who has been so welcoming to all Snipe sailors.” With a practice race and Opening Ceremonies held on Monday, October 28, the racing begins on Tuesday, October 29, with the schedule for 2 races per day with 1 race on the final day, Saturday, November 2.
