26 Snipes descended on Annapolis, Maryland, for the annual Colonial Cup Regatta hosted by Severn Sailing Association. As always, it featured fun both on and off the water with sailors from up and down the East Coast of the United States.

A few days before the regatta, the weather forecast for Saturday was grim: heavy thunderstorms and no wind. Thankfully, that forecast did not hold, and sailors enjoyed four races on the Chesapeake Bay in light wind. Competitors had to choose best routes to take advantage of wind and had to consider outgoing current, which was stronger on the righthand side of the course. The fourth race proved especially challenging as the breeze shut off during the final beat. But cloud cover and the threat of rain kept Annapolis’s famous powerboat fleet ashore, and with flat water, Snipes kept sailing upwind!

The team of Carol Cronin/Kim Couranz (Severn Sailing Association) proved most consistent, posting a 3, 2, 4, 1 for 11 points, followed by Arthur Blodgett/Charlie Bess (Lauderdale Yacht Club) with 15 points and Lisa Pline/Jill Bennett (Severn Sailing Association) with 23 points.

Unfortunately, Sunday’s forecast for big breeze and lots of rain did hold true. When sailors arrived at Severn Sailing Association Sunday morning, a weather buoy on the race course was reporting a steady 25 with gusts to 30 knots, so the Race Committee, led by Principal Race Officer Steve Podlich, decided to postpone on shore to see if the wind would ease off a bit. Sailors enjoyed a hearty breakfast from SSA’s snack bar as they awaited final word–and after about an hour it became clear that the wind would not cooperate. The regatta wrapped up with the standings from Saturday’s racing as final.

In addition to overall scores, Colonial Cup regatta chair Chris Ryan added three special division to the event: Silver, Juniors, and Women. Silver was for new skippers and/or older Snipes; this division was won by the father/son team of Steve Jahnige/Ryan Jahnige. There were two all-junior teams (and many juniors sailing on other teams); the Junior Division was topped by Tyler Mowry/Annabelle Hutchinson (AYC/SSA). Eight women’s teams competed in the Women’s Division, won by overall regatta winners Cronin/Couranz. Half of the top ten teams were women’s teams!
