Briody Memorial Regatta

Rochester, NY, USA, August 21-22, 2021

The Briody Memorial Regatta was held in Rochester, NY, while hurricane Henri hit the East Coast of the US. Saturday started with a shower in the morning, but the weekend improved after that with our reliable thermal breeze and sunshine filling in both afternoons.

Seven boats participated (despite the global pandemic) with teams coming from as far away as Dallas, TX and Kalamazoo, MI. With 5 races sailed on Saturday and 4 races on Sunday, each team had one throw-out. John & Geri Crookston sailed a finely-tuned fast boat, but a capsize on Saturday (John missed a hiking strap during a roll tack) and an unrecognized OCS on Sunday gave Gene Soltero and Laura Dahl O’Leary first-place in the regatta this year–Gene & Laura were consistently good, with no finish worse than 3rd. Bob Panza from Quassapaug, CT, sailing with his son Joe, finished in third place; Kevin Haller & Ishan Dixit took fourth to win the Norm Dahl trophy for the best local NYC finisher.

Newport YC thanks everyone for coming, and we send out special thanks to our RC crews, dual PRO’s Bill Topping & Landy Atkinson–and of course to all our NYC volunteers, the unsung heroes of a great event!

–Charlie Courtsal & John Dentinger
