Report by Joel Zackin
Twenty Eight Snipes and their sailors attended the Board of Governors Regatta. Please note, many liberties have been taken, and out right lies included with the reporting of this event. Many of the comments are “inside” jokes, known only to Quassy participants. The only way to know what actually happened is to attend a Quassapaug Regatta.
…
The Regatta became a family smack down with over half the fleet made up of multiple boats from the Braverman, Fraser, Rousmaniere, Hetherington-Young, and Zackin Families. Seven Snipe and Quassapaug first timers attended the event. By the end of the weekend a consortium of 20-something year olds where talking about how to acquire their own snipe! The fleet was evenly split between those that can easily qualify for a snipe masters event and those well under 30. In fact, the top 5 finishers were evenly split along those lines too.
Saturday began with a beautiful breakfast of Quiche hosted by Gerry and Tom McCabe.
We started with a competitor’s meeting on the lawn. Since the club only owns six RC flags, a careful review of what they meant and how we would signal the racers ensued. Only to be interrupted by a Jane Panza–esque shout (scream? yelp?) from the water. Seems that Jennifer Rousmaniere, listening carefully from the water, was attacked by a reef shark. One needs to be cautious as to how one attends the competitors meeting.
Reluctantly, Lee Griffith played the part of Lee Griffith. Guess he dislikes type casting. Hopefully he finds a new role next year.
The competitors meeting broke up to a stiff 22 knot Northeast breeze. Just under the Snipe class limit. A spited race was run. Won by Lee Griffith and Nikki Bruno. Peter and Leslie Zackin took second followed by Jack Gannon and Jennifer Rousmaniere (who showed an amazing recovery from the shark bite). With the wind knocking up over 25 knots the fleet went ashore for lunch.
After a lengthy lunch break waiting for the wind to abate, we headed back onto the lake. The second race, with Andy Klein and Debbie Muse leading was abandoned due to the wind clocking up over 28 knots. Everyone was very relieved to be back on shore and preparation for dinner and the party begun.
After and amazing dinner of clams followed by steak, lobster and accruements organized by Peter Wolcott, we moved on to the dancing. Everyone was eager to see if Liz Ghuinski could repeat her dancing title. Certainly was amazing how these sailors could rock (lobster) the dance floor after such a strenuous day on the water. The DJ looked like he was ready to run for his car when the rendition of “Its Raining Men” was performed by some of the male snipe sailors. The dance floor rocked until midnight when the hardy set up a game of beer pong. No one was able (sober enough?) to find a quarter for butt darts. Carol Tomassetti refrained from singing John Valby songs. Tommy Coyle sang something. Kegs were kicked and the party deemed a great success. Reports of late night adult swimming were unconfirmed.
Sunday, Keri Wolcott pleased the fleet with waffles, while the wind howled from the Southwest. A series race was run, won by Cam Fraser and Liz Ghuinski. Followed by a “Trading Places” Race. At Quassy, trading places is optional and up to the comfort level of the sailing team. Given the blustery conditions, a surprising number of teams traded places. Many new snipe skippers where given their first chance at skippering in a major competition. In other boats a very experienced skipper was relived of their foredeck duties to drive. See below for results.
Over the weekend 14 women skippered Snipes in races.
Out of time, the regatta came to an end. The coveted “Take a Bow” Trophy was awarded to Peter Wolcott for organizing such great food for the weekend, Nikki Bruno for her dance floor Limbo, and Justin Kusiel for his dancing. No one performed an act clueless enough to justify receiving the “Get a Clew” Award. I know Kevin H-Y is planning something for next year. Peter and Pierce Wolcott won the “Narrow Victory” Trophy for edging out a four way tie for ninth place. Megan Place skippered her way to the coveted 16th place trophy with Andy Pimental as crew. The same dynamic duo in reverse rolls received the Mike Elser “Mid-Fleet award for 14th. Hanna Calahan, Maggie Swanson, and Jamie Bartlett sailed their way to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place Quassapaug Rookie Awards.

There is a rumor of dance floor videos somewhere on facebook. Sheila Elser?
Fun was had by all!

Does anyone know the real story?
