On Sunday the last 3 races of the Campionato Invernale di Talamone (Winter Championship) Trofeo Fosco Santini were sailed in ideal conditions, with a north wind between 10 and 12 knots, sunshine and spring temperatures. For 16 years, in this beautiful part of Tuscany, the Snipes have held fierce duels and tight races surrounded by natural and wonderful scenery.

After the first three editions sailed in the lagoon of Orbetello, the Championship has always been held in the waters of Talamone, thanks to the enthusiasm of some members of the club including Franco Zamorani, Paolo Cardoni and Alessandro Testa. It goes back to those years that the bay was called “Snipe Bay” to demonstrate the strong relationship with our boat.

This continuity was caused by true lovers of the sea and races, primarily the aforementioned Alessandro Testa, strong sailor and winner of two editions of the “Santini”, now Vice President of the club and heart of this event, who perfectly managed the regatta on the water from the race-committee boat and also on land. Pietro Fantoni holds the record for the most victories, with his large troop of crews. Claudio Ciufo, who is always on the starting line with his wife, Gabriella. Andrea, Nicolò and Stefano Pesci. Bernardo Papetti and Lollo Baldi. Fabio and Daniela Rochelli. And also past national secretaries Stefano Longhi, Alessandro Rodati, and many other excellent sailors.

Fleet Romagna can count from the last 3 years among its ranks the aforementioned Fantoni and has formed a bond with the Tuscan club that seems unbreakable.

It is a fleet that, since the winter league in 1999, has migrated en masse to Talamone for the weekend, to forget the rigors of winter. At the beginning Luigi Berti won with Krantz Fontana (current national secretary). Alberto and Francesco Perdisa, Andrea Faldella, Marco Pantano, Giovanni Stella were then joined by Giovanni Ceccarelli, Paolo Fuzzi, Claudio Guadagni, Gian Marco Pepe, Filippo Perdisa, Carlo Prati, Giuseppe and Marco Prosperi, Francesco Rossi and many crews like Marco Ceccarelli, Frenk Filippini, Gian Piero Joime, Andrea Minardi, Stefano Muccioli, Marco Rinaldi, Stefano Selleri and many others.

Alessandro Testa’s brilliant idea five years ago (to include the first weekend races of the series as “Winter Trophy”) brought to Talamone high level skippers such as Augie Diaz, Manu Hens and the Italians Bruni, Lambertenghi, Longhi, Rochelli and Solerio. This year they all lined up with “the king of Snipe Bay,” Pietro Fantoni.

For sure at the heart of the awarding to Talamone the 2015 Snipe Worlds, there is this absolute continuity and a strong determination of the club Talamone to organize an event that Snipe Bay deserves. It is also because it is one of the best sailing venues in Italy.

The Championship that just ended was won by Pietro Fantoni, who has brought to the Snipe many young sailors; on this occasion, Laura Cerni and Michele Meotto. Michele, after his experience at the Junior Worlds in Rio de Janeiro, jumped on board with Pietro and took the tiller in some races, with excellent results.

Seconds were the strong Giuseppe Prosperi and Marco Ceccarelli from Romagna, always consistent and careful to precede Francesco Granchi, the sailmaker form Livorno – with his excellent Diamond sails – who had Valerio Gavazzi and Francesco Rossi as crews. Fourth finished the veteran, past World master Champion, Mauro Maurizi, with his supercrew Marco Romani. They were able to win 2 races with authority. Fifth was another team from Romagna, Paolo Fuzzi and Stefano Muccioli, always in the leading group. Sixth were Claudio and Gabriella Ciufo, who were often able to cause trouble for the top teams in the friendly waters of Snipe Bay. Andrea Pesci with Lollo Baldi (and then with his son Nicolò) also had good performances, but unfortunately they were forced to miss some races.

Two new teams demonstrated that they have already figured out how the Snipe works, and gradually improved their skills during the series. They are the brothers Luigi and Giovanna Gangitano and Umberto Ricci, who sailed with several crews; one of them was Domenico De Toro, catamaran champion and Snipe sailor.

26 teams are in the final standings. This shows the interest in this winter league.

The prize giving was beautiful in the charming clubhouse, with hot pasta and other abundant foods of the Maremma.
