Eight Bells: Bent Poulsen

SCIRA Canada has lost another friend. Bent Poulsen died September 27, 2020 in Port Stanley, Ontario.

Bent started sailing Snipes at the Oakville Yacht Squadron in the 1960s. Bent, and his crew Id Crook, finished 3rd at CORK in 1970 which qualified them to represent Canada in the 1971 Pan American Games in Columbia. They finished 5th out of 11 boats. Bent travelled extensively to many international Snipe regattas. He was a natural sailing talent who made his successes appear effortless.

When he got older and didn’t sail Snipes, as much, he was known to show up at regattas to participate in the social aspect and share his sailing knowledge with the younger sailors. The Snipe motto is “serious sailing, serious fun” and Bent was the embodiment of the philosophy.

Bent was a Past Commodore of the Oakville Yacht Squadron and a long time member of the Port Stanley Sailing Squadron where, in his retirement, he started a Youth Sailing Program.

We send our condolences to his family and friends.
