For the people who still don’t understand @snipebra’s role in national sailing.

This is the Fernando Pedroza memorial at @iateclubedonatal

On January 6, 1952, a group of sportsmen decided to give shape and life to sailing in the potiguar land by founding the Flotilla of Snipes of Rio Grande do Norte.

Parnamirim Air Base supported the idea by cooperating with the technical part of organizing regattas and providing the place for installation: two large sheds, on the right bank of the Potengi River, on Rampa beach.

The sheds were renovated. Fernando Avelar, national secretary of the Snipe class, encouraged the work.

Jaime Teixeira Leite, on a visit to Natal, brought the plans of the first boats that began to be built.

The Flotilla began to have an effective life under the direction of Fernando Pedroza (first captain), Silvio Lamartine (deputy), Humberto Nesi (secretary) and José Aguinaldo (treasurer). In 1953 the first regattas began.

Three years after the foundation of the Flotilla, on January 6, 1955, old and new sailors gathered at the residence of Aurino Suassuna.

Objective: foundation of the Iate Clube do Natal – a proposal by Fernando Pedroza.

The new club, in addition to the Snipes, brought together other international classes. The number of members has increased. The Flotilla remained attached to the newly founded Yacht Club, which inaugurated an intense nautical activity in the State.

Em 06 de janeiro de 1952 um grupo de esportistas decidiu dar forma e vida a vela na terra potiguar fundando a Flotilha de Snipes do Rio Grande do Norte.

A Base Aérea de Parnamirim apoiou a idéia cooperando com a parte técnica de organização de regatas e cedendo o local para instalação: dois amplos galpões, à margem direita do Rio Potengi, na praia da Rampa.

Reformaram-se os galpões. Fernando Avelar, secretário nacional da classe Snipe, incentivou os trabalhos.

Jaime Teixeira Leite, em visita a Natal, trouxe as plantas dos primeiros barcos que começaram a ser construídos.

A Flotilha começou a ter vida efetiva sob a direção de Fernando Pedroza (primeiro capitão), Silvio Lamartine (vice), Humberto Nesi (secretário) e José Aguinaldo (tesoureiro). Em 1953 tiveram início as primeiras regatas.

Após três anos de fundação da Flotilha, em 6 de janeiro de 1955, reuniram-se na residência de Aurino Suassuna, antigos e novos adeptos da vela. Objetivo: fundação do Iate Clube do Natal – uma proposta de Fernando Pedroza.

O novo clube, além dos Snipes, congregou outras classes internacionais. O número de associados aumentou. A Flotilha permaneceu agregada ao recém-fundado Iate Clube que inaugurou uma intensa atividade náutica no Estado.
