After a postponement on land due to no wind, the sailors were sent out for the 2nd day of racing. Several recalls under the Z-flag and a dying breeze prompted the RC to call for another postponement, this time on the water. After floating around for 2.5 hours in the hot sun, the breeze finally kicked in around 3:20 in the afternoon to a steady 5-6 knots. One general recall and a z-flag start caught 11 boats over. The Spanish team of Tabares/Morales led the race wire-to-wire and after much jockeying behind them, Harada/Suzuki of Japan finished 2nd only to have a z-flag penalty while Sackett/Sackett of the US were 3rd, Shiraishi/Goto-JPN 4th (also z-flag) and Diaz/Kelly finished in 5th.

After 2 days of postponement due to Typhoon Banyun, races began today in 8-12 knots of breeze and moderate chop. George/Stacy Szabo-USA led off the Championship winning the first race on the last beat. Alexandre & Roberto Paradeda-BRA won race 2 wire-to-wire, with Ernesto Rodriguez/Leandro Spina of USA winning the 3rd race. Regatta leaders Augie Diaz/Pam Kelly-USA sit atop the leader board with a 4-4-8, one of the only with single digit finishes.

Race 1
After several general recalls, the first race was underway in 8-10 knots out of the south. The leaders came out of the middle right and played the middle right so far most of the day. The first race was a W-L with locals Sugiyama/Kaneda rounding the top mark first followed by defending champion Diaz/Kelly from the US, Defazio/Medici URU in 3rd, Paradedas BRA 4th and Shiraishi/Goto JPN rounding out the top 5. Places were exchanged and at the finish, Team Szabo (George/Stacy) USA got the bullet followed by Sugiyama/Kaneda, Defazio/Medici, Diaz/Kelly and Tabares/Morales from Spain.

Race 2
Again anxious competitors called for 2 general recalls with the start under a Z flag. The breeze increased to a steady 10-12 and an Olympic course was signaled. The Paradedas rounded first and extended their lead on the reaches. Matsuzaki/Sugiura rounded 2nd, followed by Defazio/Medico, Sugiyama/Kaneda and Paco and Marina Sanchez of Spain. The finish found Paradedas in first, Matsuzaki/Sugiura 2nd, Defazio/Medici 3rd, Diaz/Kelly 4th, Bethlem/Gomes from Brazil 5th.

Race 3 and results will be posted once received.

Wednesday, July 27 - 6:00pm, Japan
The 2nd day of racing was postponed, although the RC attempted to get the sailors on the water. The AP was flown at 10am and lowered at 3pm in an effort to start a race. But once many of the boats hit the starting area, the RC sent everyone in for consistent breeze over 25 knots. A large sea state still exists in the bay, but it was a good call for the RC as with the majority of the fleet being charter boats, it would have been unwise the have the first race with the possibility of breakdowns. Many had a good ride on the way back from the race course.

Tomorrow is another day with winds forecasted for much lighter breeze. Sailors have been on the internet, playing football and catching up with old friends.

Competitors arrived at the Yacht Harbor under sunny skies, warm temperature and breeze-on conditions. At 9am, the bay is covered in white caps and it’s at the top of the Snipe limit. The wind seems unstable and some boats are close to being blown off their trailers/dolleys. Regatta Chairman Shinoda believes it should settled down by the 11am posted start, but we are unsure as of yet.

Fifteen nations are represented at the 42nd Snipe World championships. Measurement was conducted over two days with incredible precision. Every boat was weighed and had the Moment of Inertia test conducted, as well as measurement of all blades, spars and sails. The measurement team consisted of approximately 25 volunteers and ran like clockwork. Measurement Chairman Nobuhiko Kudara stated that most of the Snipe volunteers for measurement also work for Toyota, so they are used to precision teamwork!
