GFU Regatta

Mission Bay, CA, USA, August 9, 2026. On August 8–9, sailors gathered at Mission Bay for the annual GFU Regatta, one of the most unique and iconic events hosted by Fleet 495 and the Mission Bay Yacht Club (MBYC).
First established in 1980, the GFU Regatta is a legendary relay and endurance marathon. The event’s signature format features teams rotating crews across multi-lap course legs around Vacation Island, testing tactical strategy, seamanship, and endurance through both day and night conditions. Perfectly capturing the Snipe class ethos of “Serious Sailing, Serious Fun,” the true meaning of the “GFU” acronym remains an unsolved, friendly mystery among sailors—often debated between “God Forgive Us” and “Go Fast Upwind.”
This year’s edition featured 5 teams competing hard across the bay.
Demonstrating outstanding consistency and seamless rotation strategy, Team Bofor Rigging, led by captain Bianca Weber, claimed overall victory (team members: Annika Baumgartner, Efe Derman, Owen Fretwell, Shane Tillson, Patrick Henderson, Kaden Miller, Alex Markworth, and Nick Shand).
