You have to come to the lake – Don’t believe the forecast

The 58^th annual Fire on the Water held in Lincoln Nebraska at Branched Oak Lake finished this weekend. The event drew a competitive crowd from across the district. A junior event kicked off the regatta with five junior racers, with two of those teams going on to finish within our top ten.

Despite a dire wind forecast for the weekend of 18+, gusting to 30+, we were able to sail 6 races at this year’s Fire on the Water regatta. Saturday’s conditions surprised us with near Champagne-like winds – steady 14 with gusts to 16. It was a great opportunity to practice keeping the boat flat for speed, without having to worry about too many shifts. Four races were held on Saturday with strong competition throughout the fleet. The forecasted punchy winds did turn up on Sunday morning, though much lower than forecasted. Conditions on Sunday called for more attention to the shifts and fluctuations in wind speed to keep the boat moving. We learned that no matter what has been forecasted, it is always worth it to show up and be prepared to race!

Saturday evening after the races, a couple of the top finishers came forward to discuss what was working for them and then answered questions from other participants. This was followed with a prime rib and salmon dinner. As always, the Lincoln Snipe Fleet and Lincoln Sailing club delivered a first-class experience for the participants.

The final tallies showed the event attracted thirty-two boats from across district 2. District 2 Snipe activity is seeing some impressive traveling and activity. If you are waiting for the right time to check out a regatta away from your club there is no better time than now. There are numerous Snipe sailors waiting to help you with traveling, setting up at different venues, or even hosting you when you come to their regatta. Time to put some miles on those trailers and some wind on those sails!!
