2017 Annapolis Snipe Invite/Jr ACC’s sees tight racing in all conditions

This year’s Annapolis Snipe Invite/Jr ACC’s “30 & Under” event brought a star-studded fleet of former, current, and aspiring college sailors together for some tight racing in a variety of Chesapeake Bay conditions.

Graham Landy (2014-15 College Sailor of the Year) with crew Chris Klevan (USCGA Assistant Coach), both newcomers to the Snipe, came out strong on the first day in lighter 5-10 knot choppy conditions, winning 4 of the 5 races. Big breeze and rollers the second day (15-20 knot) gave Snipe veteran Arthur Blodgett with St. Mary’s alum Marissa Golison the opportunity to challenge. Despite straight bullets in the big breeze, Landy/Klevans held on to win the regatta by one point. The battle for third was between SSA’s Christian Filter/Jessica Bennett and Jensen McTighe from Lauderdale Yacht Club who picked up local crew Lydia McPherson-Shambarger, St. Mary’s sailor and SSA Summer Program’s Head Coach. Jensen’s big wave experience helped put him over the top with a solid 2-3-6 on Sunday to solidify third in the overall.

In the subdivision of Junior ACC’s (21 & under) with a berth at the 2018 Western Hemispheres at stake, the battle for third in the overall ASI became the battle for first and second in the Jr. ACC’s with McTighe/McPherson-Shambarger earning the top spot. Only 2 points separated McTighe from the team of Filter/Bennett, last year’s winners, who had to settle for second this year. Both McTighe and Filter/Bennett are headed to the Snipe Junior Worlds in La Coruna, Spain in August, so the weekend was excellent training. Third place was earned by Tyler Mowry/Annabelle Hutchinson from Annapolis.

The ASI/Jr. ACCs is a promotional event in its 4th year at SSA bridging the gap between the high school/college sailing and the traditional dinghy classes. A clinic was hosted by North Sail’s One Design expert Steve Pickel on Friday afternoon to acclimate younger sailors to the nuances of the Snipe such as the whisker pole and boat handling. Attendees were or will be associated with the following College Sailing programs: Yale, Eckerd, Coast Guard, Hobart, Bowdoin, St. Mary’s, Boston University, University of South Florida, College of Charleston, Tufts, Old Dominion, and University of Maryland to name a few.

Big thanks to PRO Steve Podlich, Charter Arranger Chris Ryan, Volunteers Mark & Jill Bennett, Clinic Organizer Steve Pickel, and Scorer/SCIRA Representative (and live feed expert) Alex Pline.
