This past weekend brought out 24 Snipes to Mystic Lake for the annual Winchester Invitational near Boston Massachusetts.

The weekend started off early with a surprise birthday gift when Donna Antar received a brand-new Jibe Tech from her husband George. She broke it in by sailing with Jibe Tech builder Andy Pimental on Saturday before starting the journey back to Orlando on Sunday. Happy birthday Donna!

Saturday morning brought misty, cool conditions, but the rain quickly abated and the fleet headed out for two four-leg windward-leeward races in 5-8 before coming in for lunch. Jim Bowers showed his well-known prowess on the lake with two bullets. The challenging north-east wind rewarded patience, with those in the middle often getting stuck between the righties and lefties.

Three more races after lunch saw a little more breeze but only up to about 10. Art and Jennifer Rousmaniere decided to see if ingesting water through the planks of their 1939 Woody and bailing out off the stern may add additional speed through jet propulsion. Increasing water flow throughout the afternoon proved this strategy futile, but there were smiles all around.

The threatening weather drove the party inside where the fleet enjoyed Blue Ribbon BBQ and shared stories of both lost and found opportunities on our challenging lake.

Sunday brought very light conditions and a couple of successful port tack starters in its one and only race with Jim Bowers owning the pin as the breeze came in left at the gun. The five leg windward leeward was won by Jim Bowers and Nick Giacobbe, serving as their drop race with a dominating scoreline of nothing but bullets with the top five being:

  1. Jim Bowers/Nick Giacobbe
  2. Cam Fraser/Liz Glivinski
  3. John MacCrae/Myrna MacCrae
  4. Joel Zackin/Benjamin Zackin
  5. Katie Levinson/Sarah Levinson

Family competition made a strong appearance with multiple boats entered by the Rousmanieres, Frasers, and Hetherington-Youngs. In addition, Lee Griffith made an appearance in spirit with Joel Zackin interrupting the awards repeatedly with upcoming regatta announcements.
