The first Open Villa de Madrid together with the Regional Championship of Snipe 2016, that have been run on April 16 and 17, in the San Juan Reservoir, in Madrid, have been a complete success. On top of the participation, 19 boats, exceeding the one of last year, some remarkable skippers at international level came, like Alexandre Tinoco and Victor Perez Campos, who have showed up their high class. Participants from several countries (Portugal, Brazil, Belgium) have come and also from other Spanish regions (Cantabria). From RCN of Madrid, we really appreciate the participation of skippers outside Madrid due to the efforts made and we hope that all have had nice sportive, personal and social experiences.

The crew of Alexandre Tinoco and Dries Crombe won the Open Villa de Madrid with significant authority. At the other hand, the winners of the Regional Championship of Snipe 2016 were Victor Perez Campos and Cristina Osset. Congratulation to everyone!!

On Saturday, even though the forecast gave strong winds with gusts of 30 knots, the day started with light wind, from South-East to South-West rolling very often, becoming the race very technical. Later on, the wind was slighting increasing in intensity up to 8-10 knots and finally, acceptable conditions for sailing were reached. The skippers looked for taking advantage on whatever possible situation to optimize the speed and direction, moving along the different places of the racing area. The routes for the three races, rightly chosen by the organization, were the area Strait-Reservoir Wall. Although during most of time, the wind came laterally, depending on the zones, nice downwind and upwind movements were seen. After the races, a barbecue was organized within the facilities of the Club, very well served being the fair reward to the efforts made during the day.

On Sunday, the wind blew from a similar direction than the previous day and was increasing in intensity along the hours, finally reaching around 15-18 knots and providing excellent conditions for the races. The route for the first two races was a triangle Strait-Cofio River-Reservoir Wall, passing the buoys by starboard. However, for the third race, the route was also a triangle but in the opposite direction than the previous races. All of this became an important challenge for the participants since they had to face changing conditions in direction and intensity of the wind.

In summary, there was a lot of fun during those two days and all of us really enjoyed with the competition and the social events, which are a very important part of our dear class of Snipe.

We want to thank to the Federación Madrileña de Vela, to RCN of Madrid and to all the staff, who have supported with their professionalism and excitement, their contribution in order to move forward towards the achievement of Madrid to be in a future one of the most important fleets of the Snipe class in Spain. We realize that it is not easy but with a clear vision and working all together it will be achievable.

Finally, we kindly ask all of you please that next year you encourage your friends to come to the Open Villa de Madrid Snipe 2017 and so, everyone can participate in the wonderful race to be celebrated in the San Juan Reservoir and supported by the RCN of Madrid.

We wait for all of you next year!
