It was another interesting weekend on the Chesapeake for the 2016 SSA Snipe Spring Series. 15 boats showed up for Saturday, many hoping to get in a few races before the North Americans in June. Your author was still driving to qualify for the Worlds in Vatican City only to learn that the month-old April Fool’s joke only fooled him. Saturday turned into a lovely day for socializing as the wind never came in and we floated around until racing was called a little after 1PM.

Anticipation was high coming into Sunday when forecasts called for a total blow-out. Seven boats bravely ventured out for two perfect races in 15-20 knots. A missing “G” flag on the race committee boat meant we had to sail windward-leeward courses in a building breeze leading to some close calls. Carol Cronin and Kim Couranz dominated the fleet in the challenging conditions finishing with two firsts. Bryan Fishback and Lorie Stout finished strong with two seconds while Eric Reinke and Meredith Krissoff won the tie-breaker for third with 8 points.

The race committee was fantastic and tried valiantly to squeeze one last triangle in before the wind really came on. The wind proved too much for the fleet and racing was called for the day. The sail home proved quite interesting with 20 knots of solid breeze and heaps of current right on the nose. Gusts up to 30 knots caused the fleet to rag sails all the way home to safety. As far as sailing in Annapolis goes, you could not have asked for a better day.

See you all at the North Americans at SSA, June 3 – 5. Please register early so we can plan properly for an amazing regatta!
