The 79th edition of the regatta in memory of Francis Briody was sailed on Irondequoit Bay, August 15 & 16. Newport YC is now the host club, although the trophy was originally from Olcott YC. This year the Lake Ontario thermal breeze wasn’t as strong as years past, and only developed in the afternoon, but our PRO Bill Topping still got off three races each day; we could have had four on Saturday, but since the race course is directly in front of the club it’s traditional to break for lunch on Saturday. This is also the traditional time to start making excuses for poor mark roundings, etc.

Speaking of marks, Arthur Blodgett and his crew Julia Melton set one, with firsts in all six races; they were continually pressed on the course, though, by Harri Palm and Molly Kurvink, who had six seconds. The race for third was a bit more tightly contested, but Christopher Hains and Perky McDaniel held on to take the spot.
Newport YC is a small, do-it-yourself club, and we could never host a regatta without the support of our entire membership, including our other fleets—Laser, Lightning, and our newest fleet of Catalina 22’s. As usual, the foodies attending the event were well served by Dorothy Drahzal and Carol Morse, who coordinated the host of volunteers for the regatta. And this year we were pleased to have the sponsorship of the Irondequoit Holiday Inn Express, so special thanks to General Manager Nicole Taft and her entire staff.
Finally, thanks to our retiring Regatta Chair Norm Dahl, who ran another great Briody Regatta!
