Beverly, July 13-14, 2013. The 2013 New England Championship’s second day began with light wind and quite a bit of heat. Races started bright and early, with boats launched by 10:00 and the first gun at 11:00. Two races were completed before the shifty morning northwest breeze died off completely, making everyone think racing might be over for the day. But a 180° wind shift brought an 8 knot sea breeze for the final two races.

Peter Commette and Jensen McTighe came back from their only two finishes out of the top 2 in the first two races to secure the win, Carol Cronin and Kim Couranz finished second overall, and Jim Bowers and Julia Marsh finished third.

At the awards overlooking Beverly Harbor, prizes from Quantum Sails, Kinder Industries, and Atlantis Weathergear were raffled off. The winners will get their names engraved on two trophies: the New England Championship and the District 1 Championship.

“Great hospitality and the venue is nice!” said Jensen McTighe, crew on the winning boat. “It was worth it!” chimed in junior competitor Andre Guaragna, who drove up from Miami.

“I came here with the purpose of testing out some sail combinations and tuning for light air, and ended up getting nine fantastic medium to light races, a fresh caught haddock dinner, tough starting lines and challenging shifts. So we caught everything we came for, and more.” – Peter Commette, first place winner.

Like they say… Serious Sailing, Serious Fun!

Great coverage of a terrific event. I enjoyed meeting, speaking with, and sailing with Peter Comette, Jensen McTighe, Carol Cronin and all the great folks from Medford and Winchester and New York and Canada. Shan McAdoo is indefatigable.
