North Americans – Day 2
Lakewood, April 20, 2013. Results and report by Eric Heim Short report today as we got 3 races in and had a great dinner at the club. Woke up to a chilly morning with moderate breeze from 8-15 knots. A few scattered puffs rolled through, but nothing a little extra tug on the vang couldn't solve... Diaz/ Tocke jumped out to an early lead with Rodriguez/ Melton in hot pursuit (with a replacement boat loaned by Stephan and Monica Iregens). Team Ecuador narrowly beat out Commette/ Mello for 3rd.
The second race saw a third bullet for regatta leaders Diaz/ Tocke. Behind them, the pecking order was beginning to develop. As the wind lightened for the final race of the day, it took a hard turn left with a minute till the start. Many front runners were caught up over or hitting the pin. Rodriguez/ Melton snuck out unscathed and led the whole race. Commette/ Mello caught a few shifts to challenge at some points, but were unable to pass.
The fleet returned to Lakewood Yacht Club for a fantastic Chicken Fried Steak dinner and tried to disect the intracacies of the bay for the final showdown tomorrow.
