José Bocha Torres passed away today, October 9, at the age of 94. He was an iconic Snipe sailor from Uruguay who sailed in many international events and always promoted the Snipe Class.

Bocha was also a motorcycle rider, National champion in Uruguay.

As a Snipe sailor he was several times National champion, crewing mostly for Carlos Marguia. He also saiedl against and with Pedro Garra’s father. I remember him from when I started sailing in 1973. He always liked to talk with young sailors.

One of his last international championship was the 1984 South Americans in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

He was one of the mentors of the Golden era of the Snipe Class in Uruguay, Horacio Carabelli, Christopher Schewe, Luis Chaparro, Alberto Viera, Harold Meerhof and me. I will remember him for his good humor and his empathy. Bocha was a great person and he always liked to talk with us. He sailed in his city of Piriápolis until his last days.

He will be remembered as one of the most important sailors for the Snipe community.

Sail in peace, Bocha
