Asko Saarhelo passed away in August at the age of 88 after a long illness. In addition to being a good father and a role model to his two sons, he made a 45-year career in Finnish Snipe sailing and local sailing community.

Already in 1977 Asko helped the youngsters of Pori Snipe Fleet to build 11 new Snipes using the molds the Fleet had acquired from the famous Finnish Snipe builder Halen. This boosted the Pori Fleet to a new growth and resulted Asko to become a Class Measurer.

Asko sailed first as a skipper with his two sons, Kai and Jouko, but soon the boys started racing together and moved Asko to the supporting role. This allowed Asko to put more focus on measuring. Most of the Snipes built in Finland on those days were measured in Askos garage.

Asko was active in the local fleet and club, BSF, working on various roles and projects. As the highlight of his Snipe career Asko performed measurement duties in two European Championships in Pori in 2008 and 2018.

Asko shared his positive attitude and warm smile with everyone until the end. He made his last sailing trip in Finnish Archipelago in June with his two sons, Kai and Jouko.
