Augie Diaz Recieves New Honor

Augie Diaz is Coral Reef Yacht Club’s new Dockwalloper.

Bestowed annually, the Dockwalloper award is Miami’s CRYC’s highest honor given to a Member or spouse who is accomplished in the ways of the waterfront in ways which positively impact not just the Club, but also all of Biscayne Bay’s sailing community. Created in 1961, the Dockwalloper Award is not based on competitive prowess, although that quality does not eliminate a candidate. Rather, the title and honor of Dockwalloper is conferred for outstanding personal leadership in connection with competition under sail in bay or ocean that merits special recognition.

Augie won for many reasons besides being a “class guy”. Our newest Dockwalloper coaches CRYC teenage sailors in Snipes and 505s. He also donates gear to new sailors. When Augie travels, he takes two suitcases of gear (enough to rig three boats)! Augie regularly instructs up and coming sailors and helps his fellow competitors. He also provides competitors with local weather knowledge other sailors might keep to themselves in order to gain an advantage.

Augie is a Corinthian (amateur sailor) and wherever he sails, he represents CRYC well. Augie, along with the Orange Bowl regatta, is probably the reason that CRYC is so well known. He sets an example by always saying “Thank You Race Committee” when crossing the finish line of the last race. Augie also is a sailing champion… College Sailor of the Year, Rolex Yachtsman of the Year and most recently won the 2014 International Masters Regatta.
