The new SnipeToday/Snipe Class Website

A Letter from the Editors

Today we have a new website that combines the best of snipe.org and SnipeToday in one location. As SnipeToday’s founders and editors, we couldn’t be happier about this move.

Previously, snipe.org was the evergreen source of info for the Class. Since the early days of the Internet, that’s where you found rules, deeds of gift, archives, and the tools to run a Snipe regatta.

We launched SnipeToday in 2012 to provide more frequent updates from a wider variety of sailors. Since then, hundreds of you have forwarded news, results, photos, and video, as well as your comments, opinions, and suggestions. We have published 6,260 posts on the website, plus many more on social media.

As SnipeToday grew, though, so too did the potential for confusion: which was the “official” site? Where should new sailors go first? After discussions with the SCIRA Board, we agreed it would be best to combine the two sites. We also agreed to keep the name SnipeToday, since it is by now a very well-known brand even for sailors who’ve never been in a Snipe. Now, when you go to snipe.org you will see the official site of the Class with its SCIRA logo and motto—and you will also see the SnipeToday logo.

Our goals remain the same:

  • To provide clear and easily found information about the Snipe Class
  • To have an active website full of news and updates
  • To attract new sailors, while keeping the old ones engaged

Over the past few months we designed a new website architecture, balancing the fresh and active look of SnipeToday with the ongoing need for institutional knowledge, archives, and tools. We hope that we have achieved the correct balance and that the new design answers both these needs.

As your editors, we want to assure you: We aren’t going anywhere. We eagerly await your articles, news, photos and videos, because we want this new site to continue to represent as many sailors and fleets and countries as possible. Non-official content will live in the Exchange of Views section, where differences of opinion are strongly encouraged.

Meanwhile, Official Communications from the Commodore and other board members, as well as rules and official documents, will live under “The Class” menu.

2022 marks the Snipe’s 90th birthday, and with active sailors in more than 30 countries on four continents, we have a promising future in front of us. We are excited to share with you this latest step forward, a friendly merger between snipe.org and SnipeToday.

More than ever, this is your website: a Site for ALL Snipe Sailors. As you browse around the new site, please let us know what you think. We look forward to discussing it with you, either by email or —best of all—in-person, as we all pursue our own versions of “Serious Sailing, Serious Fun.”
