Kudos to SCIRA Finland: More Than 20 Years of “TrySnipe” Success!
When it comes to grassroots promotion, SCIRA Finland is leading by example
When it comes to grassroots promotion, SCIRA Finland is leading by example. This May, the Finnish Snipe Class Association is hosting its annual TrySnipe trial session at HSK in Lauttasaari, Helsinki—a brilliant initiative aimed at getting curious dinghy sailors into the Snipe in its real element.
What makes this event truly remarkable is its longevity and track record. SCIRA Finland has been running these TrySnipe sessions for over 20 years. For two decades, they have provided a welcoming environment complete with experienced mentors, a support RIB for seamless on-the-water crew swaps, and even loaner life jackets. The formula works: many participants who started at a TrySnipe evening have gone on to buy boats and become regular fixtures on the regatta circuit.
A Blueprint for Local Growth
This is exactly the kind of initiative that can—and should—be emulated by fleets worldwide. Similar grassroots events are already being successfully organized in various countries, proving that the best way to grow the Snipe Class is from the bottom up, starting at the local level. By lowering the barrier to entry and offering a friendly, hands-on experience, local fleets can tap into a wealth of potential Snipe sailors.
Reviving the “Snipe Day” Spirit
This Finnish success story aligns perfectly with global class goals. In the past, the SCIRA Promotion Committee championed the “World Snipe Days” initiative, providing fleets with organizational ideas, marketing tips, and promotional materials to host similar open-house events. These initiatives have continued over the years, carried out with enthusiasm by various fleets and countries. They have also been encouraged and supported by successive Boards right up to the current one, which is deeply focused on promoting our boat, especially among young sailors.
SCIRA Finland’s enduring TrySnipe program is a powerful reminder of how effective these initiatives are. Huge kudos to the Finnish fleet for keeping the momentum alive and showing us all how to welcome the next generation of Serious Fun!
