Eight Bells: King Harald V of Norway

King Harald V of Norway passed away today, August 28, 2026, at the age of 89. A lifelong yachtsman, three-time Olympian (1964, 1968, 1972) in Dragon Class, and former World Champion (One Ton Cup), King Harald was a passionate competitor who deeply loved the informality and camaraderie of the sport.

Beyond his competitive achievements, he served as the Honorary President of World Sailing and was a steadfast supporter of the Norwegian Sailing Federation (he was was the first President of the Norwegian Sailing Federation when it was founded in 1970).

For decades, his royal patronage graced the Norwegian Snipe class through the annual presentation of the prestigious H.M. Kongens Cup (The King’s Cup).
