SWEC & Master Europeans – Preview

The Snipe Class is heading north to Norway as Tønsberg Seilforening prepares to host back-to-back major continental regattas: the Snipe Women’s European Championship (SWEC) from August 14–18, 2026, followed immediately by the Snipe Master European Championship from August 19–23, 2026.

The Host City: Tønsberg, Norway

Located on the south-eastern coast of Norway along the Oslofjord in Vestfold county, Tønsberg is widely regarded as Norway’s oldest town, with origins dating back to the Viking Age. Known for its rich maritime heritage, picturesque fjord scenery, and vibrant summer atmosphere, Tønsberg provides an unforgettable setting for international sailors and visiting supporters alike.

The Host Club: Tønsberg Seilforening

Situated at Fjærholmen (Husøysund), Tønsberg Seilforening is one of Norway’s premier sailing clubs, boasting modern facilities, great dinghy park setups, and direct access to superb open-water racing areas.

The venue boasts a deep-rooted historical connection with the Snipe Class. The club’s proudest moment in international Snipe racing came in August 1991 (August 2–10), when Tønsberg hosted the Snipe World Championship. That landmark event brought together 50 boats representing 20 nations and was won by Axel Roger and Jorge Quiroga from Argentina. 

Strong International Participation

Entries pulled from the official online Notice Boards across both events highlight strong, competitive fleets with representation from leading European Snipe nations and beyond:

• SWEC 2026 (Aug 14–18): Brings together 19 all-women teams representing 7 nations competing for the continental crown. Official racing will commence on August 16 and run through August 18, with a scheduled pace of two races per day.
• Master Europeans 2026 (Aug 19–23): Features an impressive fleet of 46 teams representing 12 nations, drawing experienced sailors across multiple age categories (Apprentice Master, Master, Grand Master, Master Legend). Racing action begins on August 21 and continues through August 23, with up to two races per day planned.

SWEC: Driving the Women’s Snipe Movement

The Snipe Women’s European Championship is far more than just a title event—it is a vital cornerstone in the global development of women’s sailing within the Snipe Class.

Since its hugely successful “rebirth” in Antwerp in 2019, SWEC has served as a powerful catalyst for female participation. It launched a dynamic global movement—giving birth to active communities such as Snipe Divas and Snipe Women’s—and inspired the creation of sister events in the Western Hemisphere, most notably the Women’s Hemisphere Cup. Today, women’s Snipe sailing is stronger, more competitive, and more connected than ever.

Master Racing: The True Spirit of “Serious Sailing, Serious Fun”

Master regattas have historically held a special place in the Snipe Class, consistently drawing large fleets and high-caliber competition. Masters racing perfectly captures the core philosophy of our class: Serious Sailing, Serious Fun. On the water, tactical battles are fierce and close; off the water, the camaraderie, shared memories, and legendary post-race social events make the Master Europeans an unmissable highlight on the international calendar.
