New Wind Forecast Service for Northern Lake Garda
Meteotrentino launches new Lake Garda wind tool, created by Snipe specialist and meteorologist Andrea Piazza.
For sailors training or racing on the waters of Northern Lake Garda, Meteotrentino has recently launched an updated wind forecasting service. This tool is particularly noteworthy for the Snipe community, as it was developed by Andrea Piazza— an expert Snipe sailor, former Italian National Secretary of the class, and professional meteorologist at Meteotrentino—alongside his technical team.
Technical Evolution: From COSMO to ICON
For over fifteen years, Meteotrentino’s wind forecasts have served as a vital reference point for the local nautical community. To improve accuracy, the service has undergone a significant technical upgrade:
- New Model: The system now utilizes the ICON (ICOsahedral Nonhydrostatic) meteorological model.
- Replacement: This high-resolution model replaces the previous COSMO LAMI framework.
- Frequency: Forecasts are updated twice daily on the Meteotrentino portal.
The service is designed to provide precise data for sailors, windsurfers, instructors, and race officials, as well as local commercial nautical operators.
Community Collaboration
Meteotrentino is encouraging active participation from those on the water. Users are invited to share observations or report discrepancies between the model’s predictions and real-time conditions. Feedback can be sent directly to: [email protected].
Access the Forecasts: You can view the new wind predictions here: Meteotrentino – Vento Garda
