Rio Women’s Cup celebrates women’s sailing with strong winds in the city’s iconic setting
Two days of strong winds and waves marked the fourth edition of the Rio Women’s Cup, held by Iate Clube do Rio de Janeiro last weekend. Sailing in the city’s iconic setting, and sharing the racecourse with Star class stars like Robert Scheidt and Frida Kleen, girls and women showed their strength facing gusts that reached 25 knots, according to the event organizers.
In first place, the experienced sisters Márcia and Renata Pellicano, who won three of the four races held. Márcia represented Brazil at the 1988 Seoul Olympics in the 470 class. In second place, Sophia Osthoff, just 16 years old, and Milla Pegorim. Sophia is the current leader in the overall state ranking. In third place, the master duo Christina Frediani and Sandra Villarinho. In fourth place, the junior duo of sisters Lara and Laís Passos. In fifth place, Elisa Andrade and Michelle Chevrand.
At the awards ceremony, the class’s world vice-commodore, Paola Prada, announced that the Women’s Hemisphere event will be held in Rio, at the Clube Naval Charitas, in November 2026.
