New England Championship – Make-A-Wish Regatta

Boston, MA, USA, August 4, 2024. Cottage Park Yacht club hosted the Snipe New England Championships as part of their 30th annual Make-A-Wish regatta. This regatta supports the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s mission of granting life-changing wishes to children facing critical illnesses.
Joined on the one-design line by Rhodes 19 and Sonars, the Snipes were able to get off 9 races over the two days. On Saturday, the sailors were met with a South West breeze around 8-10 knots and difficult chop. Last year’s champions Jim Bowers and Scarlett Koller got off to a strong start with a 3, 1, 1, but then suffered a breakdown and missed the last three races on Saturday. Jock MacRae and Ken Delpap, stepped into the void to win races 4 and 6. While Bob and Stephanie Adam, rode a left shift in race 5 to victory to go with their Race 1 bullet. At the end of the day, Jock and Ken held the tiebreaker over Bob and Stephanie at 14 points with Dan Nickerson and Natalie Danziger 2 points back.
Saturday night the snipe sailors joined the youth sailors and Cottage Park community for a dinner to support the Make-A-Wish foundation.
Sunday saw a reprise of the south-westerly breeze at 10-12 and extremely tight racing throughout the fleet. Jim and Scarlet also reprised their race winning formula, but with only three races they were unable to close the gap. The championship came down to the last race with Bob and Stephanie in the lead. A starting line foul proved too much to overcome as they came up a point short overall with John and Kenny using a last race second to tie Dan and Natalie, which led to the win on the tiebreaker.
Thank you to the Race Committee lead by Ernie Hardy and all the volunteers who put together a wonderful event. Also many thanks to the fleet members who lent boats to sailors looking to try out the class.
