Herb Shear – Final

With 21 boats registered, the fleet made it's way out of the jettys and into the ocean on Saturday morning with solid breeze. With 21 boats registered, the fleet made it’s way out of the jettys and into the ocean on Saturday morning with solid breeze. Unfortunately, that breeze was mostly part of the backend of a passing storm that had soaked the area for two days prior and it was leaving San Diego quickly. By race one, it was down to about seven kts from the southwest and pretty serious 5+ ft rollers from the west. The misaligned swell made fast-sailing extremely hard and not throwing up, even harder! …
In true snipe fashion we kicked things off with a general recall. In fact by the end of the day, we would have earned two generals and an “I” flag for two of the three completed races. Twenty competitive snipe sailors on a starting line often ends up like this…
Throughout the day the fleet squeaked whatever forward momentum they could from their snipes as they dodged storm swells and massive kelp islands. Challenging stuff!
By the end of the day, positions 2 through 9 were separated by just 4 points. Doug Hart and Jon Rogers, who appeared to have won all three races actually learned that they were OCS in the first race and so found themselves further down the leaderboard than they were expecting, behind a number of other teams from MBYC and San Diego Yacht Club. They would be counting on the RC getting to six races so there could be a throwout race. Eric Heim and Melissa Denman ended the day on top of the scoreboard with a 1-2-3.
Evening entertainment was provided by the sounds of John Fretwell and his band, 2 Bit Liquor and actual liquor from the MBYC bar. Serious sailing, serious fun indeed…
Conditions for day two were quite a bit better with the normal westerly in effect and much more manageable swell. Three more races in 10-12 knots under sunny skies was what we were all looking for.
After the fleet made their way to the race course and finished their pre-race tuning lineups we kicked things off under “I” flag and earned year another general recall. (Sorry RC!) But eventually, things rolling. Racing was noticeably tighter on Sunday in the steadier conditions and a few inches here there really meant the difference between crossing in front of or behind a pack of boats. Passing lanes were hard to come by so getting ahead early was crucial.
Consistency was tough to come by for most but not for Hart and Rogers, who, with straight bullets (except for that one little OCS), took the 2015 Herb Shear Invitational by a mile.
It was another great san diego snipe event and a nice warm-up for the Junior, Women’s and Open Nationals being held at MBYC this August.
Will we see you there?
