Seventy degrees and sunny greeted the annual Las Vegas Regatta and Junior Fundraiser. San Diego is a tough place to be in January. Competing alongside the 20 Snipes in the regatta were Lasers, Laser Radials, and a 29er contingent. It was great to have the other fleets (especially Junior Sailors) out there.
Saturday saw the start of the regatta with very steady 6 knot breeze. Doug Hart and Ryan Hopps took advantage and scored two firsts during the day. Dave Tillson and Ian Brill capitalized with a first place in race two, keeping the two teams within a point of each other.
Following the regatta Saturday the fleets all geared up for the Las Vegas Night Junior Fundraiser. As evening approached final preparations were being made. Right on time the poker, craps, roulette, blackjack tables came to life. The crowd filled in and the gaming was on. Quick breaks in the action were made to take advantage of the Pasta Bar which, due to the fantastic weather, was located on the rear deck.
The gaming went on and the seats were full. The room was filled with excitement and laughter filled the air. As you would expect, the craps tables took the prize for the most cheering. As the night wore on and the gambling came to a close, the Las Vegas Night raffle came to life. We were fortunate to have many generous sponsors, so the prizes were great. Best quote of the night “I’ve never had so much fun at MBYC!”.
Once again the funds raised from this event benefit the MBYC Junior Program. Thanks to all that helped make this a great success. We are looking forward to Vegas Night again next year.
Sunday saw similar conditions to the first day. Racing again was tight at the top, and the regatta winner was not known until the final feet of the final beat. Team Tillson and Brill edged out Bob Bowden to win the regatta.
The next event to look forward to is the annual Snipe Golf Classic scheduled for Feb. 9th at the Lomas Santa Fe Country Club.
Racing wise, the fleet will have a starting line in the ocean for the SCYA Midwinters at MBYC Feb. 16 – 17.
