Chioggia, August 3-4, 2013. Results and report by Corrado Perini

After straight four victories on four races in Rimini (Coppa Tamburini, June 8-9) with Federica Biondi as crew, Pietro Fantoni repeated his absolute victory in Chioggia with his young crew Allegra De Martin, posting another 5 wins out of 6 races.

For the 58th edition of the Campionato dell’Adriatico, “Charon” – the high pressure system with very high temperatures – loomed, but Chioggia did not disappoint the sailors. Despite the African heat a nice south wind came up in the late afternoon of Saturday, allowing the carrying out of 3 races.

10 boats, with 5 boats from the local fleets, was disappointing after record numbers last year, but the 5 teams that arrived from outside elevated the regatta. Pietro Fantoni brought a team of young Laser sailors from Lignano, the new Italian Master Champions Rochelli – Semec and De Paoli – Mosca showed up, and of course the great Alberto Perdisa is always present for the Combinata dell’Adriatico. The local fleets responded with Tom Stahl who “dusted off” his “old” crew Alessandro Rodati, but a lot of dust was raised also from our boat. Then there were Andrea Vianello, Moronato and also for our fleet a young team who sailed the Junior Europeans last year in Cervia and fortunately still likes the Snipe.

Fantoni – De Martin won all three races in Saturday, fairly fought. The Rochellis were undoubtedly the second and perhaps the only force capable of countering Peter the Great, but in the second race they fell to 4th place. We got back to the land at 7 PM with 3 beautiful races completed and a fresh watermelon that returned us to life again after the mystical visions and mirages from the long exposure to sun and heat. In the evening, we had dinner with friends at CNC with a few mosquitoes making a brief appearance during the cocktail party.

On Sunday we feared that the miracle would not happen again. We were towed out to race with very little air and floated for at least one hour waiting for wind. Some inkling of Scirocco appeared but less strong than day before, then finally something was moving, not the nice breeze from Saturday, but enough to set a course. With less wind Fantoni was even more elusive, leaving only the 5th race due to an OCS to the excellent Perdisa. The Rochellis took a number of seconds while it was a battle for third place, and at the end we prevailed by one point over Perdisa – Rinaldi, who were tied with Stahl – Rodati. The fight between the juniors teams was won by the local Grossato – Marangoni, but Meotto – Cassandro also raced well, always in the pack with some good choices. Three races on Sunday made a total of 6, which for me and the CNC it was a great satisfaction, thanks to all!
