The Snipe Western Hemisphere & Asia Championship is set to begin on Tuesday, September 2, in San Diego.

The Snipe Western Hemisphere & Asia Championship is set to begin on Tuesday, September 2, with 27 teams from Argentina, the Bahamas, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Japan, and the USA competing in the waters off Coronado, San Diego. The San Diego Yacht Club is hosting the regatta, which will run through Saturday, September 6.
A total of nine races are scheduled, with one discard allowed after the sixth race. As a “closed event,” the WH&A has specific quotas for each participating nation. The Deed of Gift outlines the eligibility requirements:
- Any SCIRA member who meets the eligibility requirements for the year of the Championship.
- Five qualified teams from each country in the Western Hemisphere & Asia.
- Additional entries are also allowed for current champions, including the current World Champion, WH&A Champion, and continental champions from North America, South America, and Asia. Top junior and female skippers from these continental championships are also granted entry.
Looking at the entry list, several past winners stand out, including Augie Diaz, sailing with Madeline Baldridge, and Ernesto Rodriguez, sailing with Marina Cano. Other favorites include the young American teams of Justin Callahan & Trevor Davis and Owen Fretwell & Colin Krebs. The experienced Brazilian team of Mario Tinoco & Catarina Glashester and the Japanese teams of Junichiro Shiraishi & Yuich Ooi and Tetsuo Watanabe & Koji Saito are also expected to perform well. Keep an eye on the American team of Enrique Quintero & Lorena Fundora and on the locals Doug Hart & Jon Rogers and Randy Lake & Greenfield Nguyen as well.
The competition promises to be at an exceptionally high level, showcasing some of the best Snipe sailors from across the Western Hemisphere and Asia.
The event can be followed on this website and on SnipeToday’s social media channels.
