Colonial Cup – Final

Annapolis, June 2-3, 2012: Augie Diaz and Justine O'Connor won a surprisingly breezy 2012 Colonial Cup, the annual season opener in Annapolis, MD. With winds gusting over twenty knots on Saturday, many rigs inverted—including Augie and Justine's. "We inverted three times," Augie reported after returning to the dock—but they still managed to post a 2, 1, 3 for the day. Sawhorses and a few heavy friends were enlisted to bend masts back to their proper shape, and boat work finished up in time to enjoy an Italian dinner and the keg.

Everyone was back out on Sunday to enjoy the slightly lighter but still very trying conditions; a shifty northwesterly breeze ebbed and pulsed on a whim that seemed unrelated to anyone’s wish to get to the weather mark. Races were tight and no lead was safe; Jibetech’s Andrew Pimental sailing with Debbie Dudas nipped at the winners’ heels in every race, and five different teams won one of the seven races.

“I love sailing in Annapolis,” Augie said later, “And it is because of the very challenging conditions that you have to face there. They have great RC guys like Steve [Podlich]and Phil [Richmond], the people are great and they have great parties! Can’t beat it.”
