The Piada Trophy in Chioggia was a great opportunity to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Campiondato dell’Adriatico (Adriatic Sea Championship), one of the oldest regattas in the Italian snipe class. The idea to combine two great events paid off, as it brought many boats, champions, and enthusiasm to Chioggia.

Chioggia gave us a wonderful weekend for the weather, sun and a nice south wind to complete all six races.

The CNC organized an impeccable and friendly event. Thanks to the municipal collaboration, all logistical issues were covered, so once sailors entered the club doorstep, the regatta was held in a serene atmosphere. The assistance on the water was excellent, thanks to our members working on RIBS and to the cooperation with Lega Navale di Chioggia. The buffet at Restaurant Baruffe Chiozzotte was a great idea, as was the Italian breakfast at the club on Sunday morning. The rowing test (with two traditional Venetian boats) was very fun for all thanks to the Association Remiera Clodiense; the prize giving was also pleasant with the friendly speech by Mayor Giuseppe Casson.

Between Friuli and America

But of course a sailing event can not be successful without the races, and on this occasion Chioggia was wonderful proving wrong the many voices that had accumulated over time about the race area. A nice south wind allowed six races in a sea without … seaweeds. The competitors did the rest, creating six challenging races.

At the end the victory went to the team formed by the Friulian Pietro Fantoni, for the third consecutive victory in this regatta, and the American champion Kathleen Tocke, who with impressive pace, gradually closed a gap of 7 points on the runners-up, the team Rochelli – Semec from Trieste, who, with two partial victories, resisted the attacks of teams formed by the strong Belgian Manu Hens and Spanish Victor Perez Campos.

Among many champions the locals Corrado Perini Daniela Berto certainly not disappoint, ending with a respectable 5th place after being on the podium at the end of the first day.

Summer Circuit

The Campionato dell’Adriatico ended the Summer Circuit. The South Europe Summer Circuit was combined with the regatta in Portoroz, Slovenia, sailed on June 6/7 and won by Pietro Fantoni with Marinella Gorgatto. So Pietro, winning both regattas, won the silver trophy created by SCIRA Italy for the Summer Circuit, victory to share with crews Marinella Gorgato and Kathleen Tocke.
