Shake-Up on Day 4 After Three More Races in Mahón

After no races were completed yesterday, three races were sailed today in Mahón, bringing the total number of completed races to six and significantly restructuring the leaderboard.

Conditions on the water were excellent, featuring waves and shifting wind speeds that started at 9–10 knots, increased to 12–14 knots, and later dropped back to 9–10 knots.

The fleet’s intense eagerness to secure a prime position on the starting line was clear from the start: in today’s first race, about half the boats were over early (OCS), prompting race officials to wisely abandon the sequence before time ran out.

Outstanding Performance by Rondina & Herrlein

The day belonged to Felipe Rondina and crew João Pedro Herrlein (IC Brasília / ICR Janeiro). The Brazilian team posted a remarkable daily scoreline of 1-3-2, vaulting them into a tie for first place overall.

The remaining two race victories of the day went to Belgian crews: Manu Hens & Alexandre Tinoco won today’s second race (Race 5), while brothers Sam Vandormael & Daan Vandormael claimed the final race of the day (Race 6).

Changes in the Top 10

It was a tough day for the Spanish fleet. Previous leaders Gustavo del Castillo & Rafael del Castillo dropped to 8th overall after scoring 36-13-16 today. Francisco Sánchez Ferrer & Marina Sánchez Ferrer also lost ground, leaving Spain with four boats in the top 10 down from six.

Taylor Scheuermann (USA), currently tied for first place on points, stated:

“The sailing today was very difficult. We had three long and exciting races in no more than 14 knots. The right side paid all day today. It was really a good battle between many teams like the Brazilians, the Argentinians, the Spanish, of course. And we are very fortunate to have had some good races and good results going into the final two races tomorrow.”

Looking Ahead to the Final Day Tomorrow is the final day of racing, and the championship remains open.

A total of 9 races are scheduled for the series, with a rule stating that no more than two (2) races per day shall be sailed unless the regatta is behind schedule. Because only six races have been completed so far, up to three races could theoretically be run tomorrow, weather permitting. On the final day, no warning signal will be made after 15:00.

Crucially, the discard system will come into play if seven or more races are completed. With the potential application of a discard and up to three races remaining, further leaderboard shifts are highly possible.

Tomorrow’s forecast calls for northerly winds of 7–8 knots, increasing to 12–14. The first warning signal is scheduled for 11:30 AM, with the intention of completing three races.
