58a Coppa Tamburini

The Coppa Tamburini in Rimini holds a unique place in the sailing world, not just for the competition, but for its distinctive visual identity. For decades, the Notice of Race and official posters for this historic regatta have been graced by the woodcut prints (xylography) of Giancarlo De Carolis (1932–2022).

De Carolis was a master of the woodcut—a relief printing technique where a design is carved into a block of wood. His works are characterized by:

  • Bold Contrast: The sharp interplay between black ink and white space perfectly captures the light and spray of the Adriatic Sea.
  • Dynamic Movement: Despite the rigid medium of wood, his prints convey the fluid motion of the Snipe’s sails and the physical effort of the crew.
  • A Lasting Legacy: By donating his art to the Rimini sailing community, De Carolis elevated the regatta’s documentation into a form of “maritime poetry,” merging the technical precision of racing with the soul of traditional craftsmanship.
