Final
Although Victor Demaison/Mario Tinoco had clinched the Jr World Championship a day early, they chose to sail the final day. Another great day on Guanabara Bay, the Jr World competitors set off in 8-10 knots of breeze. Geison Mendes/Fabio Pillar won the final race with Demaison/Tinoco in 2nd. Triay/Escudero of Spain crossed in 3rd followed by Uruguyans Umpiere/Puricelli, giving them 3rd overall in the regatta.
Lots of fans cheered as the winners crossed the line. The prizegiving was held later that evening and all teams were recognized with photo CDs of the weeks event. Stay tuned for more photos and a regatta report in the fall issue of the Snipe Bulletin.

Day 5
The day began with the wind out of the 'wrong' direction, NE at around 5 kts slowly increasing. The sailors were sent out for the 1pm start, but the unsettled winds caused a postponement and slowly the wind began to fill from the normal southerly direction and built quickly to 15-18 by 2pm. By the start, the wind had dropped a bit to 12-15.
The first start found the USA team OCS and the rest of the fleet a boat length behind, right on the line. At the weather mark, Demaison/Tinoco rounded first followed by ARG Norman/Giacometti and BRA Mendes/Pillar. The wind began to increase and by the 2nd weather leg up to the finish, the wind piped to 20 with puffs to 25 shifting more right.
As the sailors made it back down to the committee boat and found refuge behind the Navy School, the RC attempted to readjust the course to the shifted breeze as well as assist capsized Snipes. Once all were accounted for, the signal was sounded for the next start. All but 3 of the sailors miscalculated their watches and only 3 boats were on the line for the start: USA and both ESP boats. The race was on in breeze of 18-20 on a double-triangle course. Unfortunately a few boats had equipment failure with broken halyards or shrouds (JPN, NOR, BRA 29822) while another BRA boat had mainsheet problems in the middle of the race calling for a DNF.
Demaison/Tinoco reveled in the breeze with the Spanish teams close behind. Unfortunately at the 2nd weather mark, these 3 went on the Olympic course while ARG Norman/Giacomeeti and those behind set off on the 2nd triangle. The 3 leaders figured it out and adjusted course. At the finish, Demaison/Tinoco secured their Jr World title with a spare race and celebrated by capsizing, swimming and greeting family and friends.
The last race will be held on Friday and although the scores are fairly set, there could be a slight change in the final standings. The Jr World Champions will compete in the final race with a Club party Friday and the prize-giving Saturday.
Day 4
First thing Wednesday morning, competitors were treated to a personal tour of Brazil 1, the Brazilian entry to the Volvo Ocean Race. A chance to meet 3 former Snipe Jr. World Champions who are members of Brazil 1's crew: Horacio Carabelli (URU '84 & '86), Torben Grael (BRA '78) and Andre Fonseca (BRA '96 &'97) and an on-board look at the boat and questions to the crew.
Back out on the race course, the sailors were served up the lightest air of the week so far. 8-10 knots appeared for the first race and found the lighter breeze to the liking of both Spanish teams of Gonzales/Herrera and Pons/Escudero, Argentines Federico Norman/Cesar Giacometti and Uruguays Umpiere/Puricelli.
Geison Mendes/Fabio Pillar BRA tightened their chase of leaders Demaison/Tinoco by winning the first race of the day but replacing their throw-out of 4th with a 7th in the second race. Demaison/Tinoco, not accustomed to the lighter air, posted a 5-5 today, although they were in 10th at the leeward rounding of the first race and were able to climb back up.
Race 2 began in a little stronger breeze that lightened as the race progressed. Gonzales/Herrera ESP lead with Mendes/Pillar BRA in close pursuit and Demaison/Tinoco in 3rd. With the lighter wind and a full moon, the outgoing tide was strong and by the next weather leg, places had changed. Oggero/Bonaventura ARG lead followed by Gonzales/Herrera ESP, Norman/Giacometti ARG, Umpierre/Puricelli URU and Pons/Escudero ESP with the regatta leaders in 6th and 7th. At the finish, Norman/Giacometti ARG judged the finish correctly and crossed first in front of Gonzales/Herrera ESP followed by Oggero/Bonaventura ARG.
Tomorrow is another day and 2 more races are scheduled.

Day 3
Day three saw leaders Demaison/Tinoco extend their lead with two bullets! The standard breeze of 10-12 and big courses gave the sailors another nice day of sailing with an Olympic course given for variety the 2nd race of the day.
Geison Mendes/Fabio Pillar of Porto Alegre, Brazil also consolidated their results with another stellar day of 2-3, keeping them in 2nd overall by 7 points. The battle for third is close with Umpiere/Puricelli URU and Duarte/Trindadae of BRA within 3 point of each other.
Tomorrow the group will have the option to visit Brazil's entry into the Volvo Ocean Race: Brazil 1, which happens to have 2 former Snipe Jr World Champions among the crew (Torben Grael (1978) and double Jr World Champion Andre Fonseca). After tomorrow's races, a Brazilian BBQ will be held at the club for all. Other former Snipe World and Hemisphere Champions have been visiting the sailors: Mauricio Santa Cruz, Ivan Pimentel, and current Pan Am Champion Bruno Bethlem.
Day 2
Victor Demaison/Mario Tinoco extended their lead today winning the first race of day 2. The wind was 10-12 knots for the first day and beautiful sailing. Uruguyans Umpierre/Puricelli rounded the weather mark first, but Demaison/Tinoco passed them to round the bottom mark in their usual position. Geison Mendes/Fabio Pillar of BRA had a stellar day posting 2nd in race 3 and winning the final race of the day with fresher breezes of 12-15.
Positions changed behind Demaison with Mendes/Pillar moving into 2nd overall and Luciano/Francisco of ARG slipping to 3rd.
A few casualties on the course. Federico Norman/Cesar Giacometti of ARG ripped a jib not seeing a weather boat while going downwind with their pole up costing them race 4. Demaison/Tinoco fouled Hornos/Commette and had to perfom a 720 in race 4; meanwhile the crash gybe caused a little blood with Hornos sporting a fat lip for the evening.
Day 1
The 2005 Snipe Jr World Championship got off to a great start with 2 races in good breeze. Only 13 teams have arrived for this year's championship, but the competition is stiff. Sailors from 7 countries, many their country's Jr. National Champion, are in Rio de Janeiro to claim title to the Vieri Lasinio Trophy.
The trophy has a rich history and tradition of great sailors going back to 1973 when the Cup was established. Major names associated with this trophy include Brazilians Torben Grael and Eduardo Mascarenhas and twice Champion Andre Fonseca - both skippers are Olympians and are now associated with Brazil 1, the latest Volvo Round-the-World entry.
After Opening Ceremonies, the sailors had the opportunity to practice in Guanabara Bay in the Carlos Wanderley Memorial Race. Official races began on Sunday in opening winds of 12-15 knots. Local sailors Victor Demaison and Mario Tinoco's confidence showed with 2 wins to solidify their lead. There was a Brazilian dominance of 1-2-3 throughout the race with Henrique Duarte Haddad/Mario Trindade 2nd and Geison Mendes/Fabio Pillar 3rd.
The second race found a wind shift 30 degrees to the right prior to the race. The course was adjusted and ended up being just to the lee of Sugar Loaf - and as the afternoon progressed, the wind and waves slowly decreased. The start found the sailors favoring the right side and at the first weather mark, Americans Tomas Hornos/Morgan Commette rounded first followed by the Brazilian sailors. At the finish, Demaison/Tinoco crossed first, Philipp Umpierre/Martin Puricelli URU second and Argentines Lucciano Oggero and Francisco Buenaventura slipping in for the 3rd position.
Top 3 positions:
- Demaison/Tinoco BRA 1-1
- Oggero/Bonaventura ARG 3-4
- Duarte Haddad/Trindade BRA 4-3
