Midwinters Final Results

Daily Reports:

Saturday March 17: Looks like about 20-25 boats, good practicing today. Several new boats, including the new Jibe Tech Mk III (see photos). Weather a little uncertain for the event, storm fronts forecasted for Monday. --Ned Jones

Sunday March 18:Snipe Midwinters - Clearwater, Florida, on the Gulf of Mexico

Winds ................. 12 to 18 knots
Temperature ..... 72 degrees F.
Skies .................. cloudy
Seas ............... one to two feet

27 boats from the U.S., Norway, Argentina, Bahamas, and Brazil sailed the first three races of the Snipe Midwinters is excellant sailing conditions. Three races were sailed instead of the usual two because of the forecast of strong thunderstorms on Tuesday.

Partial results of the first three races are:
Race one: 1. Alexandre Paradeda, 2. George Sazbo, 3. Hal Gilreath, 4. Andy Pimental, 5. Chris Snow, 6. Jimmie Lowe.
Race two: 1. Paradeda, 2. Sazbo, 3. Snow, 4. Rick Arneson, 5. Gilreath, 6. Lowe.
Race three 1. Paradeda, 2. Arneson, 3. Pimental, 4. Ethan Bixby, 5. Gilreath, 6. Lowe.

In race three Chris Snow was over early and didn't come back while George Szabo thought he might have been over early and did come back (he wasn't).

--Bob Foster

Wind: NNE-NE, 10-15 knots. About 25 boats, including 2 ARG's, 1 BRA, 2 NOR, 1 BAH. Paradeda (BRA) won all three races, giving sailing lessons to those lucky enough to be close by. The right side seemed to pay most of the day, though the occasional lefty came in to mix up the middle of the beat. 3 races were held in excellent sailing conditions in anticipation of being blown out on Tuesday .

-Carol Cronin

Monday March 19:

Winds ................. 8 to 10 knots
Temperature ..... 70 degrees F.
Skies .................. cloudy
Seas ............... slight chop
One race was sailed in moderate condiitions but with heavy rains starting to move into the area racing was cancelled for the day.

Results of race three: 1. Alexandre Paradeda, 2. Ethan Bixby, 3. Pedro Larson, 4. George Sazbo, 5. Hal Gilreath, 6. Rick Areson.

Not a good forecast for Tuesday but it seems that the low pressure and rains has moved in early.

--Bob Foster

One race today in a 5-10 knot Easterly breeze, slightly to the left of the true condo breeze. The other factor that was absent was sunshine, but at least it didn't rain hard until we got in.

Paradeda again dominated the day. Ethan Bixby/Dede ? played the shifts well to climb to second just before the finish.

After the race was over, several of the late finishers decided the thunder was a good reason to head for the barn. The early finishers followed, and eventually the RC succumbed to the fleet vote. Timing was excellent as the downpour started just after most boats were hauled out and lunch was served.

Grapefruits and Welch Pizza tonight! Forecast does not look good for racing tomorrow.

--Carol Cronin

Tuesday March 20:

Clearwater ended with a bang this year. A strong low passed by on Monday night, clearing the way for us to race on Tuesday in a building northwest breeze. Since that is the dreaded direction (onshore, coming right in the cut) we were all a bit hesitant, but the first race was held in 10 knots of breeze and big seas. Although Paradeda once again led at the first mark, Pimental/Gaylor got by him downwind to lead for a short time. Paradeda passed them on the second upwind leg and never again looked back.

The Z flag was flown for the first start of the second race in order to make sure a start got off in a timely fashion, since the wind was picking up. The double triangle was certainly the right call and Snow/Jones rounded first and planed off toward the gybe mark with Szabo/Cronin in pursuit. Paradeda rounded a distant third but quickly made up the distance by setting his pole and rounded the gybe mark first. Snow/Jones deathrolled at the gybe mark, the first of what was to be many casualties in the quickly building breeze. By the leeward mark puffs were touching 30 and several boats rolled over due to cleated jib sheets. The RC quickly abandoned and sent the fleet in, most of whom chose to make the trek under jib alone.

Since we were sailing close to the beach/breakwater, it was a short sail in, but everyone who turtled also sacrificed a rig to the shallow water. George Szabo quickly got on the phone and found rigs for everyone that needed them, so all will be able to start the DonQ on Friday.

Don Q Rum Keg Regatta, Miami FL

Don Q Final Results

Daily Reports:

Saturday March 24:Miami is turning into a light air event this year. With four races under our belts, we have yet to see anything over 10 knots. Yesterday we sailed two races in 4-8 knots from the North, and puffs and lulls filled from both sides. Brazilians and Argentines again gave us all sailing lessons, splitting 2/1 for the two races. Augie Diaz/Pam Kelly also had a good day to take third overall.

Today the wind went right to the SE, the seabreeze direction, but it never filled to classic Miami conditions. Again we struggled through the lulls hoping the next puff would wind us up, or head us, depending on where the mark and the fleet were. The winning ARG team again posted a bullet with Paradeda in second, but the South American contingent showed they too were mortal in the second race today by posting a ninth and 16th, respectively.

We finish up here tomorrow in what looks like another light day, before moving to Nassau to start again on Wednesday.

--Carol Cronin

Sunday March 25:Twenty minutes before 2 pm (last chance to start a race), Art Auwater, Phil Richmond and the Coconut Grove Sailing Club RC started the fleet and the closest Don Q regatta in history unfolded. Winds were very light and variable, with sudden changes in position. Carr Moody led at every mark to repeat last year's feat of winning the last race of the Don Q. George Szabo was a close second and Alexander Paradeda third. Augie Diaz, buried after the first weather leg, performed an amazing feat by catching and passing Andres Mercatelli, but Mercatelli was able to finish right behind Diaz to win the championship.

Our thanks to all who came.

--Gonzo Diaz

Bacardi Cup Final Results | Dudly Gamblin Final Results

Daily Reports:

Wednesday March 28: 31 Snipes arrived in Nassau in perfect weather; warm wind, warm water, breeze on at 15-18!

3 races were held on Montague Bay today, Wednesday to complete the Bacardi Series for 2001. Funsch/Duffy led the first double-triangle race with the leader position changing on almost every leg! At the finish, Rick Arneson/Gus Wirth from San Diego, crossed first hitting the left side big, with Birger Jansen/Liv Ulveie of Norway in 2nd and Paradeda/Paradeda 3rd. After lunch and Kaliks by the pool, the fleet scrambled out for 2 back-to-back races. 1/2 a dozen were late but the Paradeda/Paradeda team from Brazil led start to finish with a nice lead. Bill Hardesty/Jon Rogers finished 2nd followed by George Szabo/Carol Cronin, but a check-in failure pushed their total back to 7.

Race 3, Funsch/Duffy were out of the gate first followed by Paradedas. The Brazlians put their pole up early and went in the passing lane to take the lead which they never gave back to win the race. Funsch/Duffy finished 2nd followed by Arneson/Wirth and Szabo/Cronin with Augie Diaz/Pam Kelly rouding out the top 5.

Daily Reports:

Thursday March 29: The Gamblin Series began today in 18-22 knot breezes with races 2 and 3 scheduled around a lunch break. The last race of the Bacardi also counted as the first race of the Gamblin in a compressed schedule to also fit in the NAs.

The first race today had a clean start with close racing in really breezy conditions. Hardesty/Rogers rounded first with Paradeda/Paradeda in 2nd. Screaming reaches on a double triangle had the fleet planing and everyone stayed upright! Hardesty/Rogers kept the lead until their traveler line broke. Paradeda/Paradeda passed them on the reach, but Hardesty got them back upwind. But at the finish, Paradedas crossed first followed by Hardesty/Rogers. Szabo/Cronin stayed a solid 3rd through the entire race.

After lunch, the RC called the day with the breeze filling in more. 5 boats went out in the breeze for fun and planing, entertaining those who stayed back at the RNSC. A 9:30 start and 3 races are scheduled for tomorrow.

--Jerelyn Biehl

Friday March 30: After a night of heavy wind and rain, sailors were in their boats for a 9:30 start Friday. 2 races were scheduled back to back in the morning and the conditions couldn't have been more perfect! Warm breezes in the 10-12 knot range and warm water! The regatta was back to tactics than poundage to keep the boats equal.

With the wind out of the NE, the sailors sailed w/l courses. Race 1 of the day had Funsch/Duffy crossing first followed by Hardesty/Rogers, Pimental/Gaylor, Szabo/Cronin & Jansen/Ulveie to round out the top 5.

Race 2 was won by Szabo/Cronin with George giving Carol credit for calling the right side shift that launched them into the lead after the 2nd lap. Szabo/Cronin were followed to the finish by husband Paul Cronin/Kate Fears who also hit the right and Funsch/Duffy had to settle for 3rd. Pimental/Gaylor had led the entire race but Andrew fell out of the boat just boatlengths below the finish and the boat flipped giving them a final finish of 29 for the race.

After another leisurely lunch poolside, the fleet returned to a Bahamian 12-maybe 15 knots of more perfect sailing. The breeze continued to shift south. The leaders were all duking it out at the top and too many places changed to account for it here! But at the finish, Hardesty/Rogers, Szabo/Cronin, Marcatelli, Diaz/Kelly and Paradedas were the top 5 finishers. Carolyn Brown was charging the entire race in 5th but got nipped and had to settled for 6th. On the sail in, Augie Diaz/Pam Kelly's mast broke on a stray puff; the only casualty of the series.

NORTH AMERICANS SCHEDULE:
Saturday: layday and measurement. Boats are being weighed & sails measured and lots of pool time being logged in. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday: 2 races per day with lunch break in between. Tuesday 2 races back to back with an early start to make shipping of the boats.

Sunday April 1: After a morning postponement due to threatening weather, 33 boats in the fleet went out at 2pm for 2 races back-to-back.

The wind in the morning had been very light and the fleet was surprised when 12-15 knots were on the course. For those who have been here, the clearing westerly came straight from the bridge. Flat water and nice breeze and clearing skies!!!

Race one found Paradeda/Paradeda leading at the weather mark, but Hardesty/Rogers passed them at the bottom mark to lead the rest of the race. After the first lap of a w-l course, the RC changed to a triangle. Pole reaches over crystal waters is paradise, and the fleet made the best of it. At the finish, Hardesty/Rogers crossed first followed by Paradeda/Paradeda, Pimental/Gaylor, Szabo/Cronin, Mike Funsch/Marty Kullman for top 5.

Race 2 was an Olympic course in varying breeze of 12-15. Paradeda/Paradeda were gone and had the race in the bag from start to finish. Hardesty/Rogers and Pimental/Gaylor were in the hunt as well as Lowe/McKinney. But at the finish, it was Paradedas, Hardesty/Rogers, Pimental/Gaylor, Arneson/Wirth and Lowe/McKinney rounding out the top 5.

Sailors were greeted at the dock with fresh coconuts and Beefeater gin and a steel drum band, giving everyone time to chat and dance.

2 races scheduled for tomorrow. Perfect weather in paradise is forecasted again - bummer you're not here.

Monday April 2: An absolutely perfect day for sailing Snipes..... 10-12 for the morning race across crystal blue waters and warm temperatures. Paradedas were gone off the start and never looked back. A w-l course sent the fleet off; Szabo/Cronin and Hardesty/Rogers duking it out for 2-3 with a left shift coming in for the finish. Top 5: Paradedas, Szabo/Cronin, Hardesty/Rogers, Diaz/Kelly, Lowe/McKinney.

After another great lunch break and Margarets Hamburgers & Kaliks, the fleet set off for 12-15 knots on Montague Bay. Hardesty/Rogers punched off the start (with the "Z" flying). Paradeda was deep but clawed his way back to 2nd. Marcatelli/Zapatoski hit a big left shift to round 3rd at the 2nd windward mark. The next group changed places on every leg with really tight competition. At the end, top 5: Hardesty/Roger, Paradedas, Marcatelli/Zapatoski, Diaz/Kelly, Szabo/Cronin.

2 races scheduled tomorrow with a 9:30 start (back-to-back) to make shipping time on the Betty K. Then it's Party Time Bahamian style!!

Tuesday April 3: Another perfectly beautiful day in Nassau. The fleet went out for the final 2 races at a 9:30 start back-to-back with winds of 12-15.

After a recall, the fleet was off on a w-l. Hardesty/Rogers rounded first with Szabo/Cronin 2nd, but Paradedas got Szabo/Cronin at the first leeward mark. Puffs came and went and the right would kick in giving a few a better position. At the finish: Hardesty/Rogers, Paradedas, Szabo/Cronin, Marcatelli/Zapatoski, Mike Funsch/Marty Kullman in the top 5.

2nd race was another recall with a "Z" flag and a clean start. Hardesty/Rogers started in the middle with Paradedas on their hip. One shift out to the right and Paradedas were in the lead with a nice margin. Arnesen/Wirth stayed in 2nd with Funsch/Duffy in 3rd to lock up 4th overall. Hardesty/Rogers sailed their drop race of 5th.

The fleet was in by 12:30 and after an easy pack, the pool and snack shack were busy (not to mention Eddie's bar). Make your reservations for next year now!
