District 7 Championships

Fern Ridge Lake
Eugene YC
May 27-28

Snipe sailors from Oregon, Washington, and Northern California enjoyed optimum Oregon lake Spring conditions at this year's District 7 Championship organized by the Willamette fleet and conducted as part of Eugene YC's multi-class Memorial Day Regatta.

SCIRA Vice-Commodore Bertel Bojlesen and crew Nicolas Bojlesen mastered the windshifts and medium breezes to win the regatta and earn a spot in the Oklahoma Nationals Heinzerling Division (go for the board meeting-stay for the regatta!). Kent Sisk celebrated his return to Eugene with a second after drafting 470 veteran and Fern Ridge guru Kerry Poe as crew (yes, he did break a hiking strap in one race). SF fleet members Andy Pontious and Elizabeth Pontious strategically saved themselves a nine-hour drive by shipping their boat and flying in Saturday morning to take third place. Seattle's Cliff Wright and Joel Wright earned the distinction of best capsize two feet short of the finish line in Race 3 and still managed to take fourth in the regatta. Rounding out the top five were Seattle's Kirk Smith and Diane Zabriski, who dominated the one light air, shifty, drifter, fresh breeze race.

Eugene YC's members upheld Oregonians' reputation for being disarmingly friendly and hospitable, providing breakfasts, dinners, campfires, free camping and MOST OF ALL getting the rain to stop each day just as the sailors were rigging up to go to the race course. Since this regatta was a pre-prelude to the 2001 Nationals-all agreed the Pacific Northwest is a great location for a "serious sailing-serious fun" regatta. Members of the Snipe "greased bearings" fraternity will want to begin thinking ahead to then-- Oregon is close to everywhere and state law forbids you to pump your own gas-they still have service stations!
