District 6 Championship
April 15 - 16, 2000
California Yacht Club
Marina Del Rey, CA
For you adventuresome types who needed a little variety in your Snipe venue, this year's districts was good fun. Saturday morning began with a tow out to the course area after mandatory weighing and skippers meeting. The winds started out 11 to 13 knots from the south. However, the real story was not the wind but rather the nasty swell left over
from the low which passed through on Friday. Green eggs and ham on a few boats made the conditions less than pleasant.
Dave Tillson and Gavin O'Hare showed the fleet the best way to the first mark. Two reaches, a beat and a run to the finish saw Doug and Jeff win with Jim Grubbs and Ruth Pauling not far behind. The race provided a sneak preview of what the rest of the regatta would look like. The second race was much like the first except that Jim and Ruth over stood
the first mark and made a great comeback to finish 3rd, with Tom O'Neil sailing a very nice 2nd and, Doug and Jeff got the horn. The last race of the day was ugly. The wind had died and the swells had not. Jim and Doug were never separated by much until the last beat when Jim correctly predicted the left side of the course would prevail and went on to win. Doug and Jeff were second followed by Ken and Julie Redler. Saturday's dinner was very good. Everyone retired to the bar afterwards and rumors of a country western bar were heard on Sunday morning.
Sunday's tow out left us on the course with a much smaller swell, and less breeze. Jim Grubbs led wire to wire. The fifth race turned out to be the final race of the series. Jim and Doug again were close around the course, although it was close Doug and Jeff managed to stay in front to win the race and the series.
Dave Collins, Race Committee Chair and his crew did a great job. It was also fun watching the 505's and 14's sailing on the same course.
